I know there are some online companies that will buy them for like 50 percent cash value

Needs some trusted escrow company.

I don't want to sell to some unknown website for 50% or 82% value. As long as I didn't scrape the code off, the stores should be forced to refund cash or let me use it to buy some other store's gift card that sells stuff I actually buy.
