Seth MacFarlane's Space Dramedy THE ORVILLE Renewed for a 2nd Season at Fox

Fox is setting course for season two of The Orville. The network has renewed the Seth MacFarlane space dramedy for a second season. An episode count has yet to be determined.

The news comes after the show's September debut now ranks as Fox's most-watched and highest-rated launch since Empire, when factoring in delayed viewing across multiple platforms. The series ranks among the top three new dramas of the fall and, all told, is averaging a 2.5 rating in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic when factoring in seven days of DVR — a 67 percent lift. It also has more than 10 million multiplatform viewers (up 105 percent from same-day tune-in).

"Once again, Seth has struck a powerful chord with viewers," Fox Broadcasting Co. Entertainment president Michael Thorn said Thursday in a release announcing the pickup. "He has delivered a series full of optimism, drama and his trademark humor. We want to thank him and the rest of the talented cast, as well as the producers and crew, for an incredible first season. We can't wait to see where The Orville travels in the second."

The Orville was picked up straight to series with a 13-episode order. It is MacFarlane's live-action TV acting debut. He remains an important producer for Fox and studio 20th Century Fox Television and is behind the network's long-running animated series Family Guy. Adrianne Palicki co-stars on the Star Trek-like spoof.

The Orville is the first of the freshman class of 2017-18 to score a renewal. It joins The Simpsons on Fox's schedule for next season.

First Behind-the-Scenes Teaser for STARGATE ORIGINS Digital Series

The latest addition to the Stargate universe is already underway. Since the announcement of Stargate Origins, a new series premiering on the digital platform Stargate Command, production has kicked off — and EW can exclusively reveal the first behind-the-scenes reel from the set.

The footage sees Australian actress Ellie Gall as a young Catherine Langford. Stargate Origins will focus on the daughter of Professor Langford (played by Stargate Atlantis actor Connor Trinneer) as she embarks on “an unexpected adventure to unlock the mystery of what lies beyond the Stargate in order to save Earth from unimaginable darkness.”

The 10-episode show, written by Mark Ilvedson and Justin Michael Terry, will explore the early history of Catherine and the Stargate portal.

Amazon, Warner Bros. in Talks for THE LORD OF THE RINGS Series Adaptation

cK8A537.jpg

Warner Bros. Television and the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien are in talks with Amazon Studios to develop a series based on the late author’s The Lord of the Rings novels. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is said by sources with knowledge of the situation to be personally involved in the negotiations, which are still in very early stages. No deal has been set.

The studio and the Tolkien estate have been shopping a series based on the classic fantasy novels and their assortment of hobbits, wizards, and warriors, sparking a competitive situation from which Amazon has emerged as the frontrunner. Representatives for Amazon and Warner Bros. declined to comment.

It is uncommon for Bezos — known to be a fan of high fantasy and science fiction — to involve himself personally in dealmaking for Amazon Studios. But talks for The Lord of the Rings come at an uncommon moment for the e-commerce giant’s video-entertainment division. Last month Amazon Studios flushed its executive ranks, with president Roy Price, head of scripted Joe Lewis, and head of unscripted Conrad Riggs all departing. Price’s departure came just days after he was suspended on the heels of a sexual harassment allegation made against him by a producer on the company’s original series The Man in the High Castle. Lewis and Riggs’ departures followed a week later.

But the pursuit of The Lord of the Rings is in line with a new programming mandate dictated this year by Bezos, who, months before Price departed, ordered him to shift Amazon Studios away from niche, naturalistic series such as Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle and toward large-scale genre programming with potential for broad international appeal. As part of that shift, Amazon canceled two series, Z: The Beginning of Everything and The Last Tycoon, and began shifting resources away from Lewis’ development team and to a unit led by event-series exec Sharon Tal Yguado. With Lewis’ departure, Tal Yguado was named head of scripted series, reporting to Price’s interim replacement, Amazon Studios COO Albert Cheng.

The fact that a Lord of the Rings series is being shopped by Warner Bros. marks a thaw in the relationship between the studio and the Tolkien estate, which in July settled a massive lawsuit that had dragged on since 2012. The dispute, with Tolkien’s heirs and publisher HarperCollins on one side and Warner Bros. — which produced director Peter Jackon’s live-action feature film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and its prequel, The Hobbit — on the other, stemmed from the use characters from the movies in online slot machines and other games.

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but a legal filing stated that no fees or costs were to be awarded by the court and that no party was entitled to recover fees or costs.

Dude, I'm two episodes in, and Star Trek Discovery is fucking legit. I'm loving every second of this.

It blows my mind how anyone can not appreciate probably one of the best iterations of Star Trek. The presentation, story, characters, acting.... all are good, if not great.

I'm thoroughly impressed.

Two episodes in STRANGER THINGS season 2 and I'm not impressed so far. The show is intentionally dragging its feet. I'm glad to see some of the characters but nothing significant really happens. Some of the characters have NOTHING to do and are just given placeholder storylines and being all emo for the time being.

It's not bad, sometimes good.

But how many drinks into the bottle were you when you started watching the show and thought that ?

The second episode really drew me in, but I saw nothing wrong with the first episode. It was pretty good.

What did you not like about the first?

Main character is crap, her acting is weak. Pussy alien is crap, wuss ness is annoying.

Characters are weak, Bad as Cap fixes things a bit but not enough.

Overall show is decent and has good potential, but has serious weaknesses too.

Awesome.

It's an anthology show.

Hopefully all the episodes will be new stories.

Peele is a hack and his work sucks donkey dick, The Twilight Zone is a sci-fi classic and the episodes are amazing and creative, Peele's creativity doesnt go beyond "kill whitey"

This is just asinine.

You are aware that Peele is half white and is himself married to a white woman, correct?

Okay, we will just have to agree to disagree on Martin-Green and the "Pussy alien"...

Love me some stargate, but didn't like much of the last episodes of Universe.
Atlantis wasn't that great at the end either.

Did you know O Neill became fat ?
