I don’t know if Goddard saw that and the warning was for the elbow. Didn’t hear him mention the cage grab

We don't know if Goddard did or didn't see it. He chose to point out the elbow and stand them up. He could have just chosen one of 2 simultaneous fouls. At that point his focus is on getting the fight stood up and restarted as quickly as possible, not getting into explaining multiple fouls.

Eddie grabbing the cage again was pretty blatant right? If Goddard DIDN'T stand them up, people would be shitting on him for missing another obvious cage grab. I'd rather have the right call for the wrong reason (if it even was the wrong reason--we don't fully know) than have the wrong call altogether. That just seems like common sense to me.

Someone just posted this in other thread. Poirier kneed Alvarez in the nuts right before the stoppage:

Yep, I thought there was a knee that looked low. Goddard does look like he missed that one. And while Eddie was hurt badly by that point already, if given 5 minutes like it seems he should have been there's for sure a decent chance he survives that onslaught.

Damn.

I would’ve been fine if the standup was for the cage grab. That was much more of an advantage than that elbow. He was able to keep him tight to the cage that way

Personally, I hate that 12-6 elbow rule honestly. And maybe Goddard totally missed Eddie grabbing the cage again. But the stanup happened at the right time, even if for possibly the wrong reason.

My bigger issue now is that he missed the knee that Dustin landed to Eddie's nuts in the final exchange. I don't think it really affected the outcome of the fight (Eddie was getting mauled regardless), but it IS a foul. And Eddie should have had 5 minutes to recover. We know how tough he is, those 5 minutes could have allowed him to survive and maybe the fight plays out differently.

Yea that would’ve been huge if he got 5 minutes. And he should’ve

Eddie was too out of it to react to that and Goddard missed it

That knee was strait to the nuts followed by a kick thrown while grabbing the cage. I feel for a Eddie here.

I guess Goddard was checking his grocery list when that happened.

I think the problem when a guy is mauling another guy like that is that the ref gets locked in purely on the guy taking punishment, even focusing just on their face and if they still look "with it" enough to continue. And because of that, they just aren't paying enough attention to all of the strikes being thrown by the attacking guy.

It's too bad. That knee was low, and Goddard needs to see it and give Eddie time to recover.

LOL everyone shitting on Goddard. I had Eddie too, but c'mon. He was warned in rd 1 for grabbing the cage. He CLEARLY grabbed it again to get leverage on an illegal elbow. Forget the 12-6 elbow, the second time you grab the cage after being warned already, of course you are going to lose an advantageous position. How is that Goddard messing up? I think he's screwed up plenty, but not this time.
Exactly. You can't complain when you are punished for your 4th foul even if no damage. Warned for fingers in eArs as well. Doesn't feel like it changed the winner. Porter had him out on his feet now twice within 2 rounds

Yep the standup was 100% justified.

Goddard also needs to see the illegal knee from Dustin in the final exchange too though. We need to stay objective. I know the kneejerk reaction (by me too, I'm not pointing fingers just at others) is to yell how we got screwed. But in this fight, the ONLY error I saw from Goddard was him missing the low blow by Dustin as was in the finishing sequence. Now, that doesn't mean Dustin still wouldn't have gotten the job done. But Eddie needs to be given time to recover there.

I watched the clip again and Goddard was looking directly at them when the knee to the nuts happened AND the fence grab right afterwards. I wish there was a way for the sportsbooks to find out who's reffing each fight and list it under the fight details. I would never place a bet on fight with Goddard reffing even if I thought it was a lock. I guess it's just live betting for me from now on.

Goddard is a bum.

Only ref that got me mad tonight was one allowing the lnp in the mein fight. Clear after 30 seconds of the first takedown that it was a complete stalemate on the mat. They were throwing bombs on feet 2.
Maybe a talk after this caused the Goddard early standup in oam fight

Is there ref info not out there? I'm sure I've seen judges assigned to fights before. Could be wrong

I never bothered checking before, but I will definitely be looking for ref info from now on.

Marc Goddard is a horrible referee. Not because of the stand-up in the Alvarez vs. Poirier fight in particular, but because of his tendency to immediately stand up guys when they're on the ground or in the clinch, and the complete hypocrisy on display tonight.

-Goddard doesn't penalize Hernandez for 3 clear knees to the crotch.

-Goddard severely penalizes Alvarez for a 12 to 6 elbow to the SHOULDER that does no damage.

I completely agree with Usman. I would not want Goddard reffing any of my fights either, ESPECIALLY if I was a grappler who expects to have any opportunity to work the clinch or take advantage of top position.
