Uma ultra 16 oz video review

But the fact that the Ultra are not available anymore suggest you are not the only one with that problem...just guessing.

In terms of the padding and the wrist support, how do they compare to the Tokushu? Do they feel just the same (albeit with different lining/thumb)?

Compare to the Original Tokushu?

They feel hugely different imo.

Firstly the thumb is much longer and a lot more natural. Tokushu's thumb doesn't bother me that much, but the ultra's thumb is way better and longer, no doubt about it.

The lining is night and day, Tokushu's lining got to be the worst in the business, heat up like thousand layers of cotton suffocate your hands, the slowest lining to dry by far and most troublesome to clean as well. Ultra uses polyester lining, imo the best is Satin, but polyester is close 2nd best, they are a lot tidier than Satin at least.

Padding wise, they also feel vastly different. Ultra is at the extreme end of protective's spectrum imo. They can definitely compete against the most protective gloves on the market, they might not win the most protective contest out of all, but they won't be too far off. But the down side is, they feel really similar to IMF in terms of feel on the bags. (Don't think they are ideal for sparring, since they have stitching around the top of the gloves and little dense) Tokushu in this regards aren't as protective, but the feedback is excellent, they don't pop, but they "hump" very nicely. The ultra is kinda "numb" when you hit the bag with them.

So: Thumb, liner, feel, protection all go to ultra, suffer with poor pop/feedback. Pop/feedback go to tokushu, suffer with thumb and liner.

Oh and the ultra's padding seems more durable than the tokushu's. Wrist support is--- virtually identical. Really joke aside, the wrist feel the same, if anything, the ultra have a even stiffer wrist. (Or maybe mine just being newer than the tokushu)

Cheers for the detailed answer, lol at the Goldie part. I actually liked the feel of the Tokushu lining, I don't mind the heat or sweat except that the sweat would always soak into it and it would be very hard to prevent them from developing an odour eventually. Tokushu's thumb always bothered me but I found them as protective as I could ever need; I'm a similar weight to you. Sound like v good gloves.

About them feeling like IMF, when you form a fist, is the striking surface more rounded than in the Tokushu then or the same?

Lining is probably what I hate most on the tukushu, not only heat, mainly because I have to air them forever after use or 100% need that fan if I want them next day/same day.

Yeah if you are similar weight as me. I am not a freakish hard puncher esp compare to some whom might be 10-40kg above me. Tokushu is protective enough for me too. (When there is no injuries) Ultra is kinda over kill in terms of protection, but i appreciate that when my hands are injured.

For striking surface, I think they feel tiny bit more rounded, or maybe because my tokushu has been compressed a bit. Not hugely different for sure. Just the pop is night and day.

Hi, long time, no write!
I still use one pair of Ultra gloves 16 oz almost exclusively for everything, 3 times a week. I actually have 2 pairs, but one is in reserve (the one that feels more dense, and some stitches broke, but I stitched them back myself. Also, UMA sent me another pair, although I didn't want them to because my stitches hold. Great customer service!).
Anyway, after a few months of use one pair exclusively, these are my conclusions:
These gloves are great! That's the reason for the continuous usage all these time - to be fair they are 16 oz, so they are more protective than, for ex. 12 oz Fairtex or 12 oz Topboxer I also have. The gold metallic are slowly coming off, they have inconsistencies (like the padding), imperfections, but for me, they are better then my older custom 16 oz Ultra, which means that they are getting better in ways that matter.
Will update after a few more months.

i wouldn't worry about the gloves getting shipped in a poly bag, the first time you stuff them in your gear bag the gloves get squished anyways. Like everything dont get anything that was made on a monday or a friday. they just don't have the same TLC going into them.

As for the wrinkles that are just cosmetic, and truthfully the toughest most durable leather is full grain, and it will show the most imperfections, smooth finished leathers which are what most people like are weaker as they have to shave off layers of the leather to make it smooth and remove the imperfections.

The funniest thing I read in reviews are people gauging the quality of leather based on smell when they first open the package if the glove was sent out fresh after being made the leather will be the last thing you smell when you open that bag. Just think of all the glues holding the foams together, the dyes in the leather for all the unusual colours you want, all curing in a bag while it's being shipped to you and the chemicals can't escape until you open the bag for the first time.

Yeah it's easy for you to say sitting on the back seat, no offence. But I wonder if you would say the same thing when every pair of gloves you receive arrive with creases like a old man ball sack and the seller just give you this answer. Truth is I take great care of my gear and they don't get squished in a gym bag or any other way. The problem isn't even plastic bag, it's the combination of plastic bag+this courier is clearly not working(Assuming it is the courier's fault) It's like saying use a regular car to escort money is fine for a bank in the middle of New York. Then proceed to say using the same vehicle to escort money in the wild land Mexico or Russia highway is also fine after already been hijacked the first time doing that.

I get it leather creases the more you use them either way, I have many gloves creases naturally, especially those I open my hands a lot in. But there is a borderline where the leather surface is just crease-y or the whole padding underneath it get compressed and dug into with multiple line of dents along those creases. You can really feel all those creases digging into the padding deep on the first pair. (Which I no longer have the photos up in previous comments due to online photos storage, the only pair you see now are the second pair which are mostly a cosmetic issue, which I later justify they were almost perfectly fine after ironing.) Not that the 1st pair are performance breaking, but do I have the right to point it out and request a return? I believe so.

Also the smell is clearly not because they were freshly made into the bag like you said. because the first pair I ordered was a stock version with the old design where they were still using mesh palm and no rubber pull tag. Which clearly no longer be made that way for recent year/years. So they clearly been sitting on the shelf for a long time soaking all the weird smell that you would not get in any other gloves. I also have recently received my new freshly made custom gloves from uma which are perfect and has none of those smell nor the 2nd pair that I received.

I still think it's funny that people mention the smell of gear when they get it and put it in their reviews.

I know what you're saying if you wanted wrinkly ball sack leather your would have asked for it. As a guy that has his own gear company I'd be pretty frustrated if my manufacturer sent me 50-500 gloves and 20% had this issue id be throwing a fit. but for my own personal gear im not picky i'd just jam them into my gear bag and use and abuse them, and then discard them when i got a new pair.

Well, I have other actual reviews up, in which I never care or mention about smell of leather or anything like that, because to me smell just goes away in times. I only really briefly mentioned it this one time in one sentence because they smelled really bad. I am sure anyone would say the same too if they could smell that strongly spreading in their rooms. I doubt you would be quiet too if you suddenly have a chemistry lab in your house lol.

There are just different type of people. Some treats gloves like tools that is only for training. Understandably so. But there are also people like me who is clearly an addict and I treat them as my hobby and collection as well as training tools. That's how some are satisfied with 1-2 sets of gloves and I have 20s and still buying.

Just a mini update: The ultra actually starting to have pretty good pop, especially on the like of 200-250 lb bags, It's almost the heavier and the tougher the bag the more the ultra shine. I normally don't work on bags that big for my size, but the ultra is really my number one choice if I need to or for punching a wall. I think reason is that, the RT-41 imo are more protective than the ultra, but the nature of their more pillowy softer density padding would really compress and punch through, wear out in long term punching something that rock solid or against "a wall". While the ultra has much denser padding, and really protect your fists from punching through and overly compress the padding against a hard surface. Yeah they are great gloves, maybe not the best for light bag that swing a lot, but the best for real heavy bag that you won't move too much.

I have one pair of gloves I've been using for two years now; I have a collection of gloves from other brands, but that is just because im in the business. Im sure if I stopped my business tomorrow id have garbage bags of gear to throw out or put on eBay. lol

It's hard to find the balance in softness for bag gloves, too soft they bottom out and you feel the bag on your knuckles. too hard, and you might as well be punching the bag without the padding. Obviously, those are both extremes that result in your hands getting hurt.

Inquiring minds want to know... What is the one pair of gloves you've been using for two years?

Another short update: More than 2 months since the last.

I feel like if I don't drop this short comment down I am being an ass.

With all that said before and done. The ultra are so far one of my favourite gloves now. I have said that given time I could completely changed my view on gloves, because new gloves are hard to compete with fully broken in ones that you are already used to in terms of the weight, shape, style etc all that. (Yes style matters, some gloves I throw more of a certain technique or specifically use a pair to train certain aspect)

Imo as of now, they beat Fairtex BGV1 & BGV9, Twins BGVL-3 & BGVL-6, Top King Superstar & World Series, Hayabusa Tokushu & Kanpeki 3, UMA RT-41 & IR, Venum Elte & Giant 3.0, Rival RB11, Raja Lace-up, Lemarr MK-II, Ringside Apex, Fumetsu Sparring & Bag gloves, Pro Box Pro Spar, RDX T9...

The list go on and on, but ONLY imo if you are in the market looking at these gloves vs the ultra for bag and pads work.

(Please remember that this is not a fact, just a subjective opinion according to my taste in gloves.)

I like the ultra so much I am planning to order another pair and write a full detailed review soon when I am free.
