What are your computer specs and what do you wish you had?

I have several (9 in total if I count tablets), but I am an admitted computer enthusiast, and it is really my only hobby outside of the gym.

My main machine :
7820x@5ghz delidded
32g ddr4 3200mhz ram
Gtx 1070

[email protected]
32g ddr3 1600mhz
Fury nano

[email protected]
16g ddr3 2133mhz
R290 crossfire

[email protected]
16g ddr3 2133mhz
Gt 710

[email protected]
24g ddr3 1600mhz
Radeon 5450

All serve various purposes, mostly number crunching for work or serving as a personal ftp.

I don't really game anymore, but I love overclocking and benching.

I am picking up a second hand asus rog laptop that has a 6700hq and gtx970m for $700cad tomorrow. I don't really need it, but my work laptop is an underpowered dell xps convertible.

I really want to build a thread ripper machine, but I can't justify what I would use it for.
Damn, that laptop you're buying has the same specs as my XPS for literally 1/2 what I paid (admittedly I've had it since last August)

I want to build a Threadripper rig, I guess I messed up waiting. This is going to be the one time parts didn't get cheaper over time...

i5 2500k overclocked to 4.4 - best processor ever but it's getting a little long in the tooth as I've gotten into a lot of strategy games lately and performance is noticeably worse
Nvidia 1070
16GB Ram

A lot of people say Ryzen is pretty good but prices here are essentially the same as a comparable or better Intel cpu. I've been browsing around online for a motherboard, cpu and ram today and might pull the trigger on that purchase tomorrow.

I'd love to get a Gsync monitor but this Dell 1440p monitor has served me quite well and I don't really need to upgrade it.

OP, did you build your PC or buy a pre-built? If you haven't built one before, I highly recommend doing so. I learned a lot building mine and it's lasted more than double the amount of time any pre-built I've owned before. It's oddly satisfying building one and turning on the power for the first time.

I bought. I should do want you did. I'm taking an 8 month IT certificate course.

What is cheaper to buy/ build a PC or laptop?

MacBook pro
  • 13.3-inch LED-backlit display with IPS technology, 2560-by-1600 native resolution at 227 pixels per inch.
  • 2.9GHz dual-core sixth-gen Intel Core i5 processor.
  • Intel Iris Graphics 550.
  • 8GB of RAM.
  • 256GB SSD.
I wish I had a robot that sucked my dick.

i5-8400 2.8GHz,
8GB RAM,
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB,
120GB SSD+1TB HDD
Windows 10

It can be cheaper to build a PC because you can shop around for parts online. Plus, a lot of pre-builts, in my experience, skimp on the power supply and motherboard which is not good. I had one years ago fry my motherboard less than a year after purchase because the psu was a cheap piece of shit.

On the other hand, pre-builts might be better nowadays since PC gaming is more popular than ever and there's a lot of manufacturers making a variety of builds with different specs and sizes.

I'm running:

I5-7600k 3.8ghz
16gb ram
M.2 500gb SSD
GTX 1080

I have a shit $150 monitor, though. That's my next upgrade.

Currently have

15-7500
Gtx1070
8gb ram
128gb SSD and 2tb HDD.

Will upgrade to 17-7700 And 1080ti (or whatever the equivalent is when I upgrade) and 16gb ram at some point, but it's not necessary right now.

Laptop
I7-6700hq
Gtx970m
8gb ram
128ssd and 1tb HDD.

Surface
I5-7300
Intel hd 630
4gb ram
128gb ssd.

I haven't owned a desktop since 2011. I only surf the net on tablets or smart phones.

Dual Core 2.8 Ghz 4 gigs of ram 3 usable windows 7 geforce 200 series card.

I can play civ 5 with no lag. fine by me.

idgaf as long as i can watch porn and watch ufc fights its good enough for me.

but i got a dell lattitude e5470 laptop for those that care.

Yah, threadripper and i9 is uslesss for the average user.

i5- 3.5 GHz
16GB ram
GTX 1060

i7-7700k
GTX 1070
16GB ram
custom loop

e3-1230v1
GTX 970
8gb ram

How much harder is it to build a laptop than a PC?

It's significantly more expensive, and laptops can't really be upgraded the way a PC can.

I have two, but this one is...
i7 4970K
20 GB DDR3
2x R9 290x in Crossfire.
Can't remember, much about my blu-ray drive but it's a top notch one, high read speeds.
MSI MPower Max AC motherboard.
A bunch of fans, open side, but protected from dust intake, no liquid cooling yet.
Two large disk based hard drives and one solid state hard drive. Need to grab another solid state drive, used to have two on this PC but switched one over to my other one so I could dual boot Windows 7 and 10 on it.
Hooked up directly to router via cat 7a ethernet cable.
HDMI hookup with Analysis Plus 24 AWG HDMI 2.0 compliant cable.

Always would want the best of the best, but I'm happy with my setup right now (aside from needing a second SSD drive) even with the shitty Intel news. Plus there's another videocard price boon due to crypto miners. I remember the last one, which was dogshit as I needed a card around then too.

Lol? 8gb ram is plenty for any daily use or even video gaming if you have a proper video card.

If you don't routinely close chrome/FF windows or restart, their garbage collection will bog down a computer with 16GB of ram --- especially if you run google services. GDrive and Gmail can easily take up a Gig each left to run for a few days.

I7 4770k
16gb mem
R9 380

The CPU and memory don't hold me back, only the video card. If i threw a 1070 or a 1080 in i would be stomping all my friends who built i5 6500's last year. Wish i had NVME, but not by any means slowing down my regular play, only the ability to load faster.

you didnt say what model of I7 you had. if you have 1-2 versions older than mine (second or third gen) then you might consider upgrading. that said, i'd say i'm still 1-2 years out. Computer still steamrolls everything i throw at it. just needs a better Gchip
