What are your favorite song lyrics?

It's got to be something by Elliott Smith. Easily gets my vote for best lyricist of the last 20 or so years. "King's Crossing" is so sad, but absolutely incredible.

The king's crossing was the main attraction
Dominoes falling in a chain reaction
A scraping subject ruled by fear
Told me whiskey works better than beer

The judge is on vinyl, decisions are final
And nobody gets a reprieve
And every wave is tidal - if you hang around
You're going to get wet

I can't prepare for death any more than I already have
All you can do now is watch the shells
The game looks easy, that's why it sells

Frustrated fireworks inside your head
Are going to stand and deliver talk instead
The method acting that pays my bills
Keeps a fat man feeding in Beverly Hills
I got a heavy metal mouth that hurls obscenity
And I get my check from the trash treasury
Because I took my own insides out

It don't matter 'cos I have no sex life
And all I want to do now is inject my ex-wife
I've seen the movie and I know what happens

It's Christmas time, and the needles on the tree
A skinny Santa is bringing something to me
His voice is overwhelming, but his speech is slurred
And I only understand every other word

Open your parachute and grab your gun
Falling down like an omen, a setting sun
Read the part and return at five
It's a hell of a role if you can keep it alive
But I don't care if I fuck up
I'm going on a date with a rich white lady
Ain't life great?
Give me one good reason not to do it
(Because I love you)
So do it

This is the place where time reverses
Dead men talk to all the pretty nurses
Instruments shine on a silver tray
Don't let me get carried away
Don't let me get carried away
Don't let me be carried away

"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star, in somebody else's sky, but why can't it be mine"

"I just wanna scream "Hello!", My God it's been so long, Never dreamed you'd return, But now here you are, and here I am...hearts and thoughts they fade away"

System of a down - science

Making two possibilities a reality,
Predicting the future of things we all know,
Fighting off the disease, programming
Of centuries, centuries, centuries, centuries
Science fails to recognize the single most
Potent element of human existence
Letting the reigns go to the unfolding
Is faith, faith, faith, faith
Science has failed our world
Science has failed our Mother Earth
Science fails to recognize the single most
Potent element of human existence
Letting the reigns go to the unfolding
Is faith, faith, faith, faith
Science has failed our world
Science has failed our Mother Earth.
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things,
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Letting the reigns go to the unfolding
Is faith, faith, faith, faith
Letting the reigns go to the unfolding
Is faith, faith, faith, faith
Science has failed our world
Science has failed our Mother Earth
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Spirit-moves-through-all-things
Science has failed our Mother Earth

This song may have made me religious

Most recently, the band Alvvays and a line in "Dreams Tonite"

"Who starts a fire just to let it go out?"

I love that.

"And all these emotions of mine keep holding me from
Giving my life to a rainbow like you"

Jimi Hendrix - Bold as Love.

These lines are a bit out of context, but the lyrics of the entire song are fantastic.

Them belly full but we hungry

A hungry mob is an angry mob

The rain a fall but the dirt too tough

The pot a cook but the food not enough

"Far off on the horizon you can barely see their torches
But rest assured they're out there and they're coming

If you listen, the sound is growing nearer of infantry
Marching out a hypnotizing rhythm

Destroying every town, light it up and burn it down
You may not like it now, but this is how the story ends

Above the ring of clashing steel, they raise flags of war
A sign to all the warriors who cannot hear

Amidst smoke of cannonballs, they bang the drums of death
Pound a cadence out for those who cannot see

Destroying every town, light it up and burn it down
You may not like it now, but this is how the story ends

Poison the wells and scorch the earth, everything's slashed and burnt
You may not like it now, but this is how the story ends..."

Dave Mustaine

As someone who has suffered from a pretty debilitating heroin addiction this song speaks to me in more ways than one. Layne Staley truly knew how to write about the pain and hopelessness one feels when heroin has taken a hold of their life.

We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh
My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can't be my own
I'd feel better dead
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh
Ooh

"I'll take your leg and break it.
I'll take your life and take it."

Makes me laugh every time. Great.

When I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will

I wanna push you around
Will I well
Will I well
I wanna push you down
Will I well
Will I well

Idiot wind
Blowing like a circle around my skull,
From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol
Idiot wind
Blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot, babe
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe

It's another lonely evening
And another lonely town
But I ain't too young to worry
And I ain't too old to cry
When a woman gets me down
Got another empty bottle
And another empty bed
Ain't too young to admit it
And I'm not too old to lie
I'm just another empty head

I was made with a heart of stone
To be broken
With one hard blow
I've seen the ocean
Break on the shore
Come together with no harm done...
