I got it via 1.44 floppy disk around early 1990s from college bookstore free with purchase of printer maybe. It may have been MS-DOS, black background, involved some task and you had access to all sorts of widgets, ramps, ball, pivot points, etc. and you'd position these things where you'd drop a ball that would end up traveling and completing some task... or something like that.

yep. There's an emulator called Dosbox which is pretty popular. You have to remember those Dos commands though.

It's on gog.com for cheap. It's a good option because gog games typically don't require you to piss about with dosbox or anything, so they're easy to play
 
I think they remade that a few years ago. Might have been for mobiles only though.
 
I'm surprised Incredible Machine never made it to mainstream consoles, but was on 3DO, I think I saw.
