Obviously, boom or bust = success - expectation, so even if a prospect's career turns out to be alright, he could be a big bust.
Just from a top of my head.
Satoshi Ishii
After he announced to become a mma fighter, nearly every mma fan expects the 21-year-old 2008 Judo gold medalist to become a top HW contender in the UFC or an extremely dominating figure in Jmma scene.
Promoters were throwing contracts at him and he seemed to take training very seriously with praise from training partners from top gyms in the US.
As we all know, he turned out to be an average LHW/HW fighter, who under-performed despite being carefully matched up against over-the-hill opponents following his disappointing defeat to Yoshida in 2009.
I think he is a great example that you can't just take a young, best of the best, A-level athlete and expect him to eventually become an amazing fighter that crushes all opponents.
Other examples:
Sokoudjou, the Pride phenom
Brandon Vera, the first "double UFC Champ"
