if what the other jurors have indicated (or in the case of the only black man on the jury has outright stated). Hell, the guy in his letter said that he wont convict him for anything even though he knows he's not innocent.

Like, how do you deal with that? an entire jury agrees the defendant is guilty but one guy says "you know what? i dont care if he's guilty. im not convicting".

yeah. then, just as now, the state was unable to land a conviction, forcing the matter to be taken up in Federal courts.

Warmachine had multiple violent priors and was on parole for a felony.

Also, the way sentencing works, more complicated crimes tend to get more. Warmachine got hit with a lot more felonies. Although he's serving them mostly at the same time (concurrently), that can still add up. And some of his actions tend to enhance. Restraining someone in a room at knifepoint can result in kidnapping charges, assault charges get increased if its against a spouse/girlfriend/ex, because it becomes domestic violence, he used a knife for another year or two, he attempted sexual assault (more years), etc.

Because Slager had no criminal record (so no multiplier), and "just" murdered someone and tried to cover it up, he is getting sentenced to "only" 20 years.

not that hard to understand....war machine was not a cop presented with a fleeing suspect...he sought out his porn star girl friend who spurned him. I would venture to say that the sentence for the cop was excessive.
