Will Atlanta's new stadium be done in time for the NFL season? Update: more delays possible

Why make a stadium in the south that's closed off from most of the elements. Why not be open air?

concerts, conventions, final four etc..
Half the year it's hot as fuck in Georgia

Construction seems to be going very slowly. The timeline has been delayed several times because the roof system designed by the architects proved difficult to engineer. The roof on Atlanta's Mercedes Benz Stadium is nowhere near finished. The main framework was finally installed and the internal supports removed in mid November. Only one part of one of the 8 retractable portions of the roof is on the roof. Some are calling the design the Silver Sphincter. Testing on the movable petals is supposed to begin in April. The display surrounding the hole in the roof needs to be installed before all of the cranes can be moved from the interior.

They have secured another venue for the soccer team. The Georgia Dome is right next to the new one and I thought the timeline called for it to be torn down to make room for parking after this season with demolition starting in March . I'm wondering if they will wait on that in case they run into problems. Anyone in Atlanta have any insight into this?

Hot or raining. It's more for the spectators. A covered stadium allows them to have an overhead replay screen to give spectators a better experience so they can charge more for tickets.
 
They only have 7 weeks to finish this and pass a building inspection for the August 26th game. It appears they may have the almost all of the roof panels in place on the movable sections. There are some wall panels on the moveable sections to finish. Some of the rest of the roof appears to need more work.
 
They have graded and graveled most of one side of the floor. There is still a large truck crane set up in the center of the floor. They are in the process of dismantling and removing one of the crawler cranes still inside. They are still unloading truckloads of material onto the roof.
 
By the time they finish this stadium the Atlanta will probably start working on the next one.
 
They just took one crawler crane out and brought a truck crane in. I don't know if different contractors use different cranes or if the cranes have to go to different jobs. Truck cranes can usually be set up or removed in less time than a crawler crane. There are several service trucks around the cranes so they might be getting ready to dismantle the remaining crawler crane.

There were a group of people walking through so possibly a tour. The video screen was running Mercedes Benz commercials so it might have been some Mercedes people.
 
The last crawler crane was removed on Friday night. The large truck cranes are being dismantled today and I assume will be removed before the weekend is over.
 
Both truck cranes and related parts were out of the building by 2:20 local time Saturday. Now the floor is clear to work on.
 
After working all night, it appears that the preparation of the stadium floor was finished about 7AM today and ready for installation of the field turf.
 
So, in your opinion are they moving in the right or wrong direction as far as catching their deadlines? Still sounds like there is quite a bit to do.

It's difficult to tell anything about the rest of the building. I assumed they were ready to bring in the turf in but they started laying another layer of the top of what I assume is the finish stone in this process. They got a little over half way and stopped about 4:30 this morning.

This is the installation procedure from Field Turf's website.

They seemed to have most of the first part done with a white base stone and a black finish stone. They were working at night which could have been because of traffic or heat. When I saw them laying another layer last night, I assumed they would finish by 8AM again. I was surprised to see that they stopped at 4:30 this morning. I don't know if this is the final layer.

The installation of the turf according to the above schedule takes 27 days. That might be 8 hour days and they can speed that up by using more crews working longer days because they only have 35 days until the August 26th game.

I wouldn't be comfortable cutting things so close. I would like to have everything complete at least a month prior to opening such a large venue. There was a semi load of material being lifted onto the roof outside the building this morning and work to be finished on the parts of the roof visible on camera.

I don't know what the local regulations are for inspection and occupancy so it's difficult to tell if it will be ready for August 26th.

Looks like they started laying turf this afternoon.
 
I've been watching them today. They started closing the roof at 8AM. It looks close to being closed but it did close farther on the last 15 minute interval picture at 5PM. Spend over a billion to have a roof that opens and it doesn't work. Wouldn't they have modeled this better. Seems an architect pulled this out of his ass with an unproven design.
