20th Century Fox Sets Release Dates for Six Untitled Marvel Films

As the comic book movie arms race between Marvel and DC continues to intensify, 20th Century Fox is attempting to get ahead of the curve and late last night, the studio staked claim on some prime real estate that spans over the next few years by dating SIX of their Untitled Fox/Marvel films.

The studio wisely chose not to divulge which X-film will arrive on which specific date, as the dates are all subject to change, but they do make it abundantly clear that they have big plans for the future of one of their most prized franchises: the X-Men.

    Here's a look at Fox's updated X-Universe release calendar:

    Untitled Fox/Marvel Film - June 7, 2019 (new)
    Untitled Fox/Marvel Film - November 22, 2019 (new)
    Untitled Fox/Marvel Film - March 13, 2020 (new)
    Untitled Fox/Marvel Film - June 26, 2020 (new)
    Untitled Fox/Marvel Film - October 2, 2020 (new)
    Untitled Fox/Marvel Film - March 5, 2021 (new)

Based on what we already know, Fox is in various stages of development on X-Force, Gambit, and Deadpool 3, so there's a very good chance a few of these dates have been reserved for those projects. They have also recently expressed interest in further spin-offs, including films centered around Dafne Keen's X-23, Alpha Flight, and the Exiles, so those features could also be in play.

Another Fantastic Four film has also recently been rumored to be in development.

Breaking down the dates, the previously announced February 14, 2019 date seems to be an ideal launching pad for their long-gestating Gambit solo feature, although there's an equally good possibility X-Force, which already has Joe Carnahan (Stretch) attached to direct, lands there. It would be a fairly quick turnaround for stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, and Zazie Beetz after Deadpool 2, but it's certainly doable if production were to start next spring.

Assuming Gambit claims February, June 7 is also a potential X-Force date since it's unlikely to house a prime X-Men sequel with Dark Phoenix arriving just around six months prior. As for November 22, a date typically reserved for a big name release, it's up in the air whether they'd roll out another main continuity X-Men film so soon unless they decided to split Dark Phoenix into two parts.

2020 will once again see the release of three films and since this past March proved to be kind to Logan, could March 13 be marked for the return of X-23 in her own solo feature? Meanwhile, June 26 seems like a better release date for Deadpool 3 or X-Men 8, while October 2 will likely be used to either debut another spin-off franchise or maybe for a New Mutants sequel and/or a new Fantastic Four reboot. The same candidates are also in consideration for March 5, 2021.

First Look at Tye Sheridan's Cyclops from the Set of X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX

Looks pretty good as Cyclops. But as long as Fassbender, McAvoy and Lawrence are in it, none of the other supporting characters will flourish.

Two More Join X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX Cast; Toad and Ink May Return

Jessica Chastain recently confirmed that she has joined the cast of X-Men: Dark Phoenix as Lilandra and now further casting news may be giving fans a tease about the upcoming movie's details.

That Hashtag Show reports that Kota Eberhardt has been cast as a supporting character codenamed "Luna." There aren't a lot of details available about the character outside of the original casting call description which describes the character as "female, mid-late 20s, open to all ethnicities. Beautiful, could possibly have a severe look. Luna is intense and exudes a sense of power. Although she is a commanding presence, she is also slightly unhinged."

Also joining the cast of the latest X-Men installment is Scott Shepherd as Dr. John Grey, father of Jean Grey, played by Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner.

Additionally, two actors from 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past are also in talks to join the Dark Phoenix cast. Evan Jonigkeit, who played Toad, and Gregg Lowe, who played Ink, may both return. The additions of Toad and Ink to the character roster may add credence to a rumor that Magneto bringing together the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in the film.

Marvel Might Get X-MEN, FANTASTIC FOUR Back as Talks of Disney Buying Fox

Disney has spoken to 21st Century Fox about acquiring most of its assets in a move that, should it come to fruition, would allow the Rupert Murdoch-controlled company to focus almost exclusively on sports and news, according to CNBC.

The negotiations come at a pivotal time, as Disney is readying a streaming product to rival Netflix and could use movie and TV content from 21st Century Fox to do so. As for 21st Century Fox, it is trying to purchase European satellite TV service Sky, which would help it distribute both news and sports, along with all other content.

Executives at Disney and Fox spoke for the past few weeks but are no longer negotiating, David Faber of CNBC reported Monday. He added that negotiations could begin again but that there's no guarantee a deal will get done.

The potential purchase would finally bring the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and all ancillary characters under the Disney-owned Marvel umbrella.

For Fox, a deal to unload its TV and movie studio on Disney would mean partially exiting a rapidly changing space where competition suddenly includes richly funded digital companies like Amazon.com, Facebook, Google and Netflix. News and sports, on the other hand, remain slightly more predictable businesses.

Disney's need for content, meanwhile, has never been greater, given the streaming business it is creating with its acquisition of BAMTech in August is meant to go head-to-head with Netflix.

Disney, in fact, is pulling its Pixar and Disney-branded content from Netflix so that consumers desiring those shows and movies will have incentive to subscribe to Disney's upcoming service, which will also include Marvel and Star Wars product and could conceivably add movies and shows from Fox at a later date.

Disney already owns one broadcast TV network in ABC, so it couldn't also purchase Fox's broadcast network without violating current FCC rules. But it would like to get its hands on the rival conglomerate's cable channels, such as National Geographic and FX, although Fox News Channel is presumably off the table.

First Look at Sophie Turner as Phoenix in X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX; New Story Details

Set in 1992, about 10 years after the events of last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix opens with the X-Men, including Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters), in a new, unexpected role: national heroes. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) even lands on the cover of Time magazine. But his growing ego puts the team at risk. “Pride is starting to get the better of him, and he is pushing the X-Men to more extreme missions,” Kinberg says. After they’re dispatched to space for a rescue mission, a solar flare hits the X-Jet and the surge of energy ignites a malevolent, power-hungry new force within Jean (Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner)— the Phoenix.

Based partially on Chris Claremont’s comic, Phoenix will feature some of the series’ biggest set pieces to date, including the X-Men’s first trip to outer space. It’s also the most sinister, and somber, chapter in the saga and includes a massive twist halfway through that will irrevocably change the course of the franchise. “This is probably the most emotional X-Men we’ve done and the most pathos-driven,” McAvoy says. “There’s a lot of sacrifice and a lot of suffering.” The movie becomes a fight for Jean’s soul as Phoenix threatens to overtake her mind and divide the X-Men, particularly Jean and her mentor, Charles. “It’s about the butterfly effect of this thing happening,” says Turner, who studied schizophrenia and multiple personality disorders to prepare. “What happens when the person you love the most falls into darkness?”

All involved with the production of Phoenix last summer in Montreal wouldn’t know the answer as the experience on set was actually calm, an adjective not usually applicable to X-Men shoots. Ellen Page recently accused Last Stand director Brett Ratner of homophobic and abusive behavior on the set of that film. (Ratner’s lawyer did not respond to EW’s request for comment.) Singer faced sexual assault allegations in 2014. Those charges did not stem from anything on an X-Men production, but his sets do have a reputation for drama. (On Dec. 4, Fox dismissed him in the middle of directing Bohemian Rhapsody, and though he’s credited as a producer on Phoenix, he has not been directly involved with the film.) “I had heard stories of these sets,” admits Jessica Chastain, who plays an otherworldly shapeshifter who comes into contact with Phoenix. “But working with Simon and Hutch and Sophie was the most loving, strong, happy set.” Adds Lawrence: “It was unrecognizable. Everything was on time. Everything was organized. These movies have always been fun amidst chaos, and now they were fun with no chaos.”

'First look at Sophie Turner as Dark Phoenix' implies set photos of her in costume.

Instead, its photoshop concept art put on a magazine cover.
