Genuine question. I had to drive to Las Vegas for my sister's wedding last month, and I drove through Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada. I have no idea why people live in that region. There's huge stretches of nothing, you have to deal with droughts, the heat is unbearable, and there are deadly creatures like snakes and scorpions.

No state income tax in Nevada. Vegas is close to California.

Old people used to like it because it was cheap and warm, with low humidity. Some asthma sufferers as well. Add in the weirdos who want to get away from people, and there ya go. Cali is turning more and more third world every day.
 
Relatively non-crowded
Low cost of living
No winter
Modern cities
National parks/outdoor activities
Mexican food
Not California
