Belt Systems need to go away

Sounds like the OP is just as big an ass as that black belt.

Why do BJJ instructors commonly downplay Strength and Conditioning?

S&C is important for people who compete. Strength and endurance can be excellent equalizers for technique, especially in a big tournament setting (64+ man brackets). Though, for myself (training since 2001, not competing anymore) and many like me with full time jobs, family, other obligations...

    Best Leglock DVD's / Vids?

Danaher's dvd is really solid. The one piece missing, either intentional or not is some of the ways and places he uses his hands to grip and manipulate the knee. There are a number of spots where he pulls the knee and doesn't make mention of it. I would imagine it's intentional as to not...

Are KEENAN and RAFA Soy Bois, or are they TOUGH?

DTW is a joke, I went to visit Japan, asked for training recs here, he invited me to train. We connected on Facebook, he said we could train as long as I’ve never badmouthed him online. I was honest and told him I said in a post he was crazy if he thought he should be invited to Metamoris...

    David Jacobs...

That's so sad... He was a terrific human being. I first met him in 2003 back at Yamasaki's, so sorry to hear about this...

Who's the best grappler in this subforum?

Dan Wolfman didn't train with me in Japan because I admittedly bashed him on the forums. I would have enjoyed him filming it and then not putting it online since I would have probably tapped him silly.

    Brandon Quick SMH

Didn't see it on the front page, didn't use search function, if there was a previous thread about this topic, it should not have gotten to page 2 by this point.

Would you fight Conor McGregor in a pure Grappling match?

Don't understand this thread. I've rolled with a dozen+ ufc fighters, not really a big deal. Wouldn't be any different than rolling with some of my brown or black belt training partners, many of which are fighters or have faught. I'd roll with just about anybody, except as somebody pointed...

Black Belt Job in Charleston, SC

Good luck with your search. As a black belt, I find the opportunity very unfavorable. It boils down to $24 or so per class taught, but restricted to those classes and times makes it difficult for anybody to hold another paying position anywhere, on top of what it sounds like having to sign...

    BJJ private sessions, your thoughts?

Yeah definitely agree with the above posters. Privates are fantastic from blue belt on. No reason to waste the money as a white belt. Nothing a black belt will tell you then that a purple belt couldn't in terms of what a white belt can grasp

    Sneaky ninja toe hold attacks

I use this toe hold a bit here and there, I like to pull the top leg in to expose the foot more when I attack it, which sometimes allows me to attack the original leg for a kneebar, so there becomes a more legitimate threat for attacking the leg in 2 ways.

    Visiting Tokyo

Are there gyms that I could rent/borrow a gi? I really have no clue about this stuff and trying to search on an iPhone with limited wifi access isn't the easiest thing in the world haha. I'll contact axis and see what they say.

    Hilarious BJJ slam highlight vid

I've made this argument at IBJJF rule meetings as a thought for future rulings. I think the risks and dangers of slamming are too high, but if somebody puts you in a triangle and you lift them over your head, you should earn points as a slam would end the fight, just as putting somebody out with...

    baseball bat choke

I've finished people in competition at brown belt with the baseball bat choke, I triple attack a cross collar, brabo, and baseball bat choke and have had pretty solid success with it.

    Visiting Tokyo

I'm visiting Tokyo for the next 10 days. I'm a black belt, just looking to do a little no gi training. I'm staying in Shinagawa, but willing to take the train around if it means some better training. English-friendly would be preferred as my Japanese doesn't extend beyond about a dozen words...

Why is so many people have a weird obsession with Shoyoroll gis?!?!?!?!

I disagree with anybody saying the quality of Shoyoroll is great. The fit isn't any better than most gis out there, but they certainly do not hold up in terms of quality. Lucky gis were (are?) more expensive than shoyoroll, but at least the one I have has lasted over 3 years (hand me down from...

Why is so many people have a weird obsession with Shoyoroll gis?!?!?!?!

It makes no sense... I've only ever had 1 shoyoroll which was a gift. The top ripped less than a year from when I got it (I had about 4 gis on rotation at the time). I actually sold just the pants for $150 last week. I've been training for nearly 14 years and shoyoroll gis are some of the lowest...

    * VID*. And you thought the youth graping coach was bad!?!?!?

I have very little problem with this. The language bothers me the most, but kids are being raised too soft these days with all the anti bullying and over protecting. My wrestling coach was way way worse except for language, and our team was extremely successful. Can't baby kids all the time...
