Can you slide in to half guard if you dont have contact? I always thought you had to grip something before youcould pull any sort of guard.

This may seem like a silly question, but how do I register for the Pan Ams? I can't seem to find it on the IBJJF site, or maybe I'm not looking hard enough...

I know plenty of guys who are great at doing this type of wristlock... I've even hit it several times on decent judokas, although one of them caught on and Tai Otoshi'd me as I tried to do it, maybe that might work for you? Not sure of the details though.
