It works perfectly fine given how shitty certain divisions in the UFC are doing, how skilled top fighters in other orgs are and how unattractive the UFC is to a great number of fighters. Refusing to acknowledge that fighters are top fighters because they're not in the UFC is a terrible and erroneous way to evaluate reality.

Saying that the UFC doesn't have the all the best fighters isn't making it a black and white issue. We know the UFC doesn't have Francis and we know that the top fighters at Bellator (many of whom were top fighters in the UFC) could come back and do very well in the UFC's extraordinarily awful LHW and HW divisions. Refusing to acknowledge that by imposing a ludicrous restriction on the conversation is what makes it a black and white issue.

I remember this fight very well at the time I thought Pele was screwing around way too much and really could have finished Newton many times but kept giving him time to recover until he got arm bared. Its perplexing really because Pele also lost to Matsui who he was doing a lot of damage to as well yet in the end got controlled on the ground, seems to me like he got beat by 2 opponents that on paper he was supposed to win against.

Something was off about this guy. He was a great talent who lost to many opponents who weren't nearly as talented as him. He was either screwing around for no reason or just had some really odd bad luck, like landing nuclear knee on Newton and headkick on Lidell yet neither of them got knocked out.

Hughes wasn't so lucky when he ate the flying knee.

I notice right away posters talking about his behavior. Wanderlei Silva even said that this was the meanest guy he ever met in MMA. He enjoyed inflicting pain.

The first 11 original UFC events and anything around that time period because it was true that most of the fighters besides the top fighters did not know much of anything about grappling and there were a lot of TMA instead of cross trained guys, in the Pride era I honestly don't see much difference in skill level from up to now honestly, maybe there are more black belts in BJJ than before but there were plenty of camps that cross trained all aspects like nowadays.

Its also not like everyone must know every minute detail in order to win fights nowadays either there are still plenty of specialists around like Pereira and Adesanya, how many fighters know Judo or Sambo now its mostly fighters from
Eastern Europe while Americans tend to have a firm grasp of Wrestling its also funny you bring up Severn because while he doesn't possess much in striking skills he was as experienced a grappler as one could imagine trained in Sambo, Judo and Wrestling he even submitted Conan Silveira back in the day.

That's just one of the many scumbag things he did... he had beef with EVERYONE in Chute Boxe, he sparred WAYYY to hard, and the legend is that Chute Boxe always sparred hard was bullshit, Pele just wanted to hurt people, and that's why they got rid of his ass. He was also looking for fights with rando people who stared at him wrong and tried to injure them as bad as he could. I'm not talking fighters, I'm talking about a dad or so at a bar. They should have deported his ass back to Cuba.
