part of the issue, is that colleges don't want to be labeled as solely having one type of race or culture. that's why i think many asian folks are left out, because of that desire for variety. and if you think about it, there is some merit to it. having folks from different areas of the world, with different perspectives, makes for a more interesting environment. that is a large part in what college is supposed to be: a microcosm of the world and how people from all walks of life live among each other.

Asians are like 5.5% of the population, are they really responsible for changing the demographics of schools that much?

Are the claims Asians are over populating colleges or just over respresented compared to how many Asians are in the USA?

A large part of a University's endowment is based on research, fill the university with affirmative action dumbasses while other universities are filling them with people who are significantly better and the quality of your post grad students, professors, etc goes down, which directly affects the quality of the research being done there and thus the endowment amount.

Not only that but if you lower the average level of intelligence, over time you pump out dumber and dumber graduates and your reputation takes a hit. This is part of why MIT caught up to places like Harvard, Stanford and Yale in terms of prestige because for a long time (and from what I hear, still) MIT has been a pretty strict meritocracy whereas many of the other Ivy League schools were letting in people due to family, reputation, etc who didn't necessarily earn their place. Dumb people = shit place to learn.

Also, I don't know why I've just had to type two paragraphs to explain why a meritocracy will always end up producing greater talent than some arbitrary system based on random factors, which is what this identity politics oppression Olympics nonsense is. I'm guessing you didn't do so well in your SATs...

it's not about the percentage they are of society. it's the percentage they take up as college attendees. a college that consists of mainly one group, let's say asians since it's the topic of this thread, will highly influence the college, and the folks who are in charge of the college, may not want that. not only that, other students, both non-asian and asian, may not want that as well. i'm not saying that all colleges feel this way. but i'd say that a decent amount do.

I'm sorry, did you just assume the time period I was talking about? Bigot...

But yeah anyway, MIT had nowhere near the reputation somewhere like Harvard did until World War 2/Cold War when defense spending went crazy and both the size and breadth of research increased hugely. Trust me when I say even probably up to the 60s/70s MIT was seen as a second tier school to Harvard, even in shit it specialized in like Engineering, Math, etc. Of course nobody says that now and the longer Harvard keeps diluting it's intellectual talent pool with tokenism the more these roles will eventually be reversed.

I actually went to MIT in the late 90s (yeah I know I'm old) and even then Harvard had a bit of a rep for 70/30 (70% smart people, 30% dumb) though that was more to do with legacy admissions back then.
