Met DeLaHoya, Floyd, and Sugar Ray Leonard at Treasure Island casino. I was there to cheer on Matt Vanda from our gym. DeLaHoya and Sugar Ray were scouting him, and someone from Floyd's camp was interested in flying him out for a workout, and I guess since it was at a casino, Floyd wanted to come with.
Floyd's bodyguards owned the place, no better way to describe it. They were openly smoking weed in the casino lobby and repeatedly told casino security to "go find someone else to fuck with". They were courteous to the customers though, and the pit boss/manager was very respectful towards them. No one could get within about 10 feet of Floyd. He was all smiles and generally seemed like a nice guy. Chilled for a few minutes with his security at the after party in the hallway of the hotel and smoked a blunt. At this point in time, I will admit that security clowned me for being a dumb ass kid. I told them I thought Floyd looked much younger in person. I thought Jr and Sr were the same person.
DeLaHoya was uninterested in meeting anyone past a brief handshake, and didn't repeat anyone's name. Only there for business, and I think he was paranoid being close to the skinheads that followed Vanda everywhere. They were both awkward when talking to each other. I don't think he was expecting the kinda crowd he was in and Vanda was surprised to see him. He kept giving sideways glances and seemed irritated that people kept interrupting him.
Sugar Ray was an all-around good dude. He had been by the gym to watch him work out that week, and had been in contact with his coach ahead of time. They watched some film, chatted it out, and Vanda spoke highly of him. He took the time to introduce himself and give some pointers to a few of us gym rats. He autographed some gloves but didn't want any pictures. Really cool guy, and I'm really proud that I was able to contain my inner fan boy.
