Beards, Barbells, and Beer

I was a corner smasher and net crasher. Frank was the sniper, and my brother was just a great athlete.

I was small but fearless as fuck. My MO was alwasy to find the biggest guy, hit him early and hard and set the tone. That was until running into this guy in HS...

Is that Peter Worrell? Yeah he's a big dude, I wouldn't want to run into him on the ice.

Yeah, that's him. I hit him once. Centre ice at a tournament at the Bishop's University arena. He wasn't a very good hockey player at all. At that time, he was tall and athletic.

Sort of reminds me of another kid named Wayne Simmons. Played a few years ago in Junior A here in Brockville. He was tall and lanky. Didn't seem like much out there. Defintely had some athletic ability. I remember always being drawn to him when watching the games though. He seemed to always be in the right place at the right time.

Is that a 531 variation you do? I can't seem to identify it.
And are your hockey games strenuous af?

It's a tweaked version of Neanderthal No More.

My Tuesday hockey game is always pretty strenuous so it's nice having Wednesday as a light day at the gym. Sunday is up and down. Some weeks we kill a team so it's pretty light, other weeks it can be really intense if it's a close, competitive game.

Hockey (league)
Last night's game started as a close game. We probably had more chances but only ended the first up 1-0 I think. In the second we continued to control the play and you could see that the other team was starting to wear down and we scored a few more. I think it was 4-2 at the end of the second

In the third we completely took over and the other team started getting chippy. They started taking a lot of penalties and wasting energy on cheap shots and sloppy play. We continued to roll along and eventually won the game 7-2. Our top scorer had a couple points so I think he's #1 in the league right now. I had a single assist but had a good game all around. The best part of the game was that one of our weaker players scored the game winning goal on a nice deflection.

The team is really clicking right now and we've developed our identity as a speed team. We have a lot of good skaters and when we get some flow going it's really hard for other teams to keep up. We are now 7-2 with the best goals for and goals against in the division so I wouldn't be surprised if we get bumped up a division after our next game.

Hockey (pick-up)
I had a really good game last night. I watched some videos earlier in the day about stick-handling and quick hands and I really concentrated on that with good results. My line really clicked and we had a tonne of chances and a bunch of goals. My legs were didn't have as much jump as usual but my hands felt good which more than made up for it. I scored a couple goals early and then had a bunch of nice assists. My line did a good job of controlling the puck and setting up nice passes in the offensive zone plus both helped out on defense. I had a couple partial breakaways that I got robbed on but made up for it with a nice goal late in the game. Fun times.

C2 rower, dynamic stretching, various mobility exercises.

Life and work was super hectic on Thursday and Friday last week so I had no time for the gym.

Hockey (league)
Last night was a good game and was finally a competitive one. It was our first game of the season on Rink 1 which is an older, smaller rink in the complex that we play in (there are 3 rinks total) which definitely didn't play to our strengths. As I mentioned recently my team definitely relies on our speed which is somewhat nullified by playing on a smaller ice surface. We didn't seem to be able to put together much in the way of speed or skill plays which kept the game pretty close early on.

The game was tied 2-2 at the end of the first and then the other team ended the second period up 4-3. However in the third we took control and just started crashing their net and playing a tougher game. We controlled the third period and won 7-4.

My line had a great game and combined for 5 goals, though somehow I managed to come away with only 1 assist on the gamesheet. Regardless, my wingers did a great job of driving the net and getting dirty so I just kept putting pucks to the net and they did all the hard work.

We are now 8-2 and lead the division in every category so hopefully we'll get bumped up a division before next week.

Turns out my team did get bumped up. I've played most of the teams in the new division with one of my old teams and I think it will be a good division. We can beat all of the teams but we'll need to play well and play as a team to do it.

C2 rower, dynamic stretching

- HB Squats (w/warrior lunge)
45x6
95x5
135x3
165x2
195x3
225x2

Felt pretty good. Reps require some effort and concentration but are still pretty easy.

- Walking lunges: 3x10/leg @ 45 lb, used a loaded barbell today.

- Pull-throughs: 3x10
- Cable crunches: 3x12

Bit more stretching to finish up. Since I missed Thurs/Fri last week I'm going those days today/tomorrow and then deads/bench Thurs/Fri. basically reversing the week.

Tues Dec 1, 2015

75x8
95x6
115x4

Totally bombed on that last set. I guess I should drop the weight a bit since I'm having trouble consistently hitting 3x10.

- Facepulls: 3x15, 32.5 kg
- Cable external rotations: 3x12/side, 2.5 kg

- Cable woodchoppers: 3x10/side, worked up to 42.5 kg

Realized today that the one cable machine is definitely marked in kg because the weights I was using matched another machine that had kg and lb on it. derp.

Tues Dec 1, 2015

Hockey (pick-up)
I was tired last night and it was a bad week to be tired. We were missing a bunch of regulars and their replacements were a bunch of fast guys. My hands were sloppy last night and I didn't play my best, especially because I had to work harder on defense to keep up. My line still generated a lot of chances but not as many goals as we should have had. Oh well, it was a good workout at the very least.

Hey, Doc.

Do you have a cut throat razor, or have experience using one?
I'm thinking of getting one, but I don't know anyone who's ever used one. I just want to know if they're worth it or if I'm just gonna slice my throat open.

Flash.

My money would be on "no". Have you seen the Doc??? He's a rather hairy gentleman.

This might be true, but he might maintain and shape his neck and cheeks, which is what I'm gonna use it for.
