I think this is a damn good thing. Bernie's got principles.
Sen. Bernie Sanders refuses to endorse his own son. Good
Sen. Bernie Sanders has rejected his own flesh and blood, turning his back on his own boy and all but disowning his only son. Good. More fathers should be so neglectful. Because while the socialist believes in sharing economic goods, he doesn’t believe in passing down a political inheritance.
Sanders the senator refuses to endorse Levi Sanders, the New Hampshire congressional candidate.
“Levi has spent his life in service to low income and working families, and I am very proud of all that he has done,” Sanders told the Boston Globe. “In our family, however, we do not believe in dynastic politics. Levi is running his own campaign in his own way.”
Republicans will blister at his socialist tendencies, Democrats at his sanctimony. But everyone should praise his principles. Sanders is rejecting two of the most corrupting human tendencies in a democracy: patrimony and nepotism.
The temptation to use status to secure benefits for relatives has existed throughout history. It is perfectly natural, and that’s part of the problem.
Only a deadbeat would refuse to use connections to make sure their child had advantages in life. But that tendency becomes corrupting when a father uses his connections to crowd out and bestow political privileges at the expense of others. And make no mistake; it still happens today, with federal contracts serving the role of yesterday's fiefdoms and congressional seats replacing yesterday's crowns.
Sanders doesn't want to participate in that. Good for him.
