Putin's in a tough spot if NATO start publicly putting Ukrainian membership to discussion. If he immediately starts saber rattling, nobody will believe him, because he's already played that hand and nothing happened. He pretended if NATO armed Ukraine it was a red line, but NATO has overtly armed Ukraine since the beginning, and nothing has happened.

Putin would be the boy who cried wolf if he went too hard, and NATO would probably eventually accept Ukraine. They could just continue supplying Ukraine as per their obligations, just as they're doing now, but even more legitimately. If the US elected Trump, Trump could then leave NATO and it wouldn't affect European security anywhere near as much. Trump would be unable to roll out the red carpet for Putin, as NATO would already be publicly discussing the next step that didn't involve US support.

That would be a monumental defeat for Putin. The whole world would watch Ukraine enter NATO and he couldn't do anything about it, not even with the support of Trump.
