Does anyone think this is not good news? Many states still have brass knuckle bans such as my home state of California. I don't understand how they justify making it a felony to possess brass knuckles.

AUSTIN, Texas — Beginning in September, you’ll be able to carry brass knuckles to defend yourself if you get into a sticky situation in the Lone Star State.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed HB 446 into law on Saturday, after it carried unanimously in both the state House of Representatives and the state Senate.

The bill removes “knuckles” from a group of weapons banned in a previous law that made it illegal to possess, manufacture, transport or sell a list of things that range from improvised explosive devices to homemade guns.

According to Texas Penal Code, knuckles are defined as “any instrument that consists of finger rings or guards made of a hard substance and that is designed, made, or adapted for the purpose of inflicting serious bodily injury or death by striking a person with a fist enclosed in the knuckles.”

Rep. Joe Moody, a Democratic legislator from El Paso who sponsored the bill, told the Texas Standard that the bill was meant to protect people who wanted to protect themselves.

“A young woman who has a keychain for self defense, certainly fits the statute of knuckles,” he said. ” And she was arrested for that.”

Those types of arrests are “certainly antithetical to our rights to self defense,” Moody added.

Knuckles are a ‘legitimate self-defense tool’
Up to this point, possessing knuckles was a class A misdemeanor punishable for up to a year in jail or by a maximum fine of $4,000, according to a bill summary published by the House Research Organization.

Supporters of the bill argued “knuckles are primarily a defensive tool,” the summary says, and shouldn’t be associated with “explosive weapons, machine guns, and other prohibited weapons.”

The law comes after lawmakers previously removed switchblades from that same banned list in 2013.

“Law abiding Texans who carry knuckles, perhaps as part of a novelty key chain, should not be vulnerable to jail time for possessing a legitimate self defense tool,” the summary says.

Everyone in Texas is strapped anyway. Don't see much of an issue. It's like banning M80s when dynamite is legal.

How long do any of you think it will take for a company in Texas to make a brass knuckles pistol grip for an AR-15?

Everyone has a gun there. What are brass knuckles gonna do?

They're a nice self defense tool that you can't kill yourself with. Plus makes you seem like a real hard cunt compared to packing heat.

I like the idea.

good idea in some ways but also bad.

mainly because hitting someone with brass knucks to the face pretty much disfigures a guy (dunno how many sherdoggers have seen aftermath of getting hit with brass knucks)

also can kill, but they look cool and and are handy as fuck

Seems like a good stealthy assault weapon to me.

Just slip on the brass knuckles quick and hit a guy in the face, KO...???...Profit.

But to be fair you can do that with any other hard object I guess but the stealth factor of something that small that you can put in your hands ASAP with no one noticing is a huge advantage of brass knuckles.

that is the point the government should have an interest in banning something

the government should be able to give the People a very good reason if it is going to ban something. The default should be people have a right to own whatever they want and the burden should always be on the government to justify why it is banning something

Hm I just assumed they were legal in every state.

I remember trying to bring a pair back from Honolulu to Canada and they "disappeared" from my luggage lol. There was one of those random inspection notices from TSA in my bag so I just assumed they took them.

Looking at the various state laws right now apparently they are banned in Hawaii, but they were openly selling them along with switchblades at the night market.

I was about to make a joke about how it's surprising that the law wasn't pertaining to legalizing the rights of legally bought brass knuckles to have a smaller pair of brass knuckles on a keychain.

Kind of like a Tex-Rus nesting doll.

You can carry a gun, why the hell would brass knuckles be an issue.

I got jumped by three guys at a party back in 1993. One of the guys hit me with brass knuckles. I remember getting hit, and hitting them back, then one of the punches felt different. I tackled that guy while the other two guys hit me while i struggled with the other guy. These guys were football players at penn state. Fucking no one jumped in to help me, but after i left, the guy with the brass knuckles came back to the party looking for me. He ended up getting his head split wide open with his own weapon. I had a big lump with a small cut and I was lucky it wasn’t a clean hit.
