Social D.O.T Finally Banned All "Emotional Support Animals" Except Actual Service Dogs in Plane Cabins

I feel like with dogs, if I buy a seat for my dog, why can’t she just ride there for the trip regardless of size?

It's not the size that they're concerned with. It's the series of incidents involving untrained "emotional support" animals pissing on other people's legs. Or shitting in the isle. Or biting other people's faces off mid-flight. Or do any other typical things that animals often do.

Frightening moments at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as a Delta spokesperson said a passenger was bitten by an emotional support dog aboard a Delta flight.

Delta said the passenger had to be taken off the flight to receive medical attention. Passenger Bridget Maddox-Peoples said it appeared the man was mauled by the dog and was badly injured.

“The gentleman’s face was completely bloody, blood in his eyes, cheeks, nose, his mouth, his shirt was covered in blood,” said Maddox-Peoples.

I'm completely with the airlines here: Fuck the "emotional support" pets. It's either Real service animals or the cargo hold.

Is there a law preventing them from banning all this shit and telling these idiots to fuck of?

Service Animal versus Support Animal: What’s the difference?
By Lisa Bloch | Marin IJ correspondent | July 31, 2018

A service animal and an emotional support animal are distinctly different.

Lately, there’s been growing confusion surrounding service and support animals. At Marin Humane, we receive calls almost daily about this topic, so here are a few facts:

SERVICE VS. SUPPORT

A service animal and an emotional support animal are distinctly different. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service animal is defined as a dog that has been individually trained to perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The task(s) performed by the dog must be directly related to the person’s disability, like helping to lead someone who’s visually impaired down a sidewalk or detecting the onset of a seizure in someone with epilepsy and helping that person remain safe.

An emotional support animal provides comfort to people with anxiety, depression or other challenges. They are not trained to perform specific tasks but their presence brings a sense of calmness and security.

REGULATIONS

The ADA allows for service animals to go anywhere with their person. One cannot demand proof that the animal has been certified, trained or licensed, and they may only be legally asked two questions: “Do you have a disability that requires a service dog?” and “What work or task has the animal been trained to perform?”

Unlike service animals, emotional support animals cannot go everywhere with their person. It’s up to the individual establishment as to whether they’ll allow them. The exceptions are housing and air travel. Federal law requires landlords to allow tenants to have emotional support animals and allows them on planes, however the airline can ask for a letter from a mental health professional and reject certain species (as was the case in the news recently involving a woman who wanted to bring her support peacock on a plane) or certain sized animals.

But there’s no national or state registry for either service or support animals. In regards to service animals, according to the Washington Post, “Some legitimate training programs offer certificates or ID tags, and plenty of shady websites will ‘register’ a service or support animal for a fee. But these have zero legal significance … What’s important is that the animal is trained to do tasks that help a person with a disability.”

Similarly anyone can purchase a service animal vest online.

Marin Humane provides ID tags for service dogs only and the handler must complete and sign an affidavit declaring the dog meets the legal requirements for a service dog. Fraudulent representations can result in fines and even jail time.

“Even for trained animals, maneuvering through crowds or traveling in confined places like planes can be stressful, but service animals are conditioned not to act out. Untrained animals in those circumstances are prone to misbehave by growling, biting or having accidents,” a recent article in the New York Times points out.

THERAPY ANIMALS

Therapy animals are trained to interact with lots of people, not an individual. Their handler brings their dog to hospitals, schools, adult daycare centers and other places to provide stress relief and affection. Marin Humane brings dogs and their humans who’ve both gone through a special course to several places throughout the county, but they have been invited by these establishments.

Many believe that the growing use of emotional support animals tends to discredit the use of service animals. It’s a complex issue for sure and there are documented instances of pet guardians abusing the system for their convenience. We’ve come a long way in recognizing how animals can help humans but as is the case with most things, a few rotten apples can spoil the bunch.

Good. They have their hands full dealing with drunk fucktards. They don't have time to be cleaning dogshit everywhere.

I wonder who has to get off the plane in this scenario;

Passengers with severe asthmatic and allergy related conditions to animals

Or

The mentally unstable freak with the animal?

Can't they just bring toys and a pacifier with them like the toddlers?

You do not need an actual living being to serve as your emotional support. Use your imagination.

What about we Africans who have been subjected to all manner of horror from bad governance (and not developing gunpowder and ballistic tech in a timely fashion)???

We're not bringing our support nibi on planes to make naira like some lowly Gadawan Kura *kisses teeth*, we need to bring our support nibi on planes to Cry Freedom:

Man forced to sit in Emotional Support Animal's feces on Delta Airlines flight
Posted 11:52 am, November 7, 2018, by CNN Wire

A Bay City, Michigan man is still coming to grips with what he went through on a Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta to Miami after he sat in dog feces.

Matthew Meehan said Delta’s response has made the matter worse.

Meehan flies a lot, and on November 1 boarded a late-night Delta flight from Atlanta to Miami. He remembers smelling a foul odor when he was getting on the plane. Another passenger next to him smelled it too.

Meehan reached down to grab his phone charger when he discovered what was happening.

“It wasn’t until I literally got down in there that I realized, oh my gosh, I am in feces,” he said.

He initially didn’t know whether it was human or animal feces, but Meehan said there was “a lot” of it, and it had gotten on his shoes and clothes.

He went to the lavatory after a flight attendant gave him some clean-up items.

“I was supposed to be OK with two paper towels and a bottle of gin, and they also didn’t stop the boarding,” Meehan said.

As the boarding continued, he got off the plane to speak with someone at the check-in desk. Eventually, more paper towels were brought on board to wipe down the affected seats and floor area.

Meehan wasn’t satisfied with the clean-up, but a Delta employee gave him some options.

“‘Sir, I am pushing this plane back, it is time to go, you can either sit in your seat or be left behind,'” he recalled an employee telling him at the gate.

Meehan needed to get to Miami, so he reluctantly sat in the now blanket-covered seat.

“Was the animal or person sick? Have I been exposed to something? Do I need to get inoculated?” he remembers wondering.

Delta took the plane out of service once it landed in Miami. The company issued the following statement Tuesday about the incident:

“Delta apologizes to a customer affected by an issue on board a recent flight after the area around his seat was not appropriately cleaned following an incident involving an ill emotional support animal. Delta has issued a refund and additional compensation to the customer impacted by this incident. The safety and health of our customers and employees is our top priority, and we are conducting a full investigation while following up with the right teams to prevent this from happening again. Upon landing in Miami, the aircraft was taken out of service to be deep-cleaned and disinfected.”

Meehan said Delta is offering compensation for his trouble, which includes reimbursement for his shoes and clothes, plus a refund for the flight. But that’s not going to be enough for him.

“I am not a litigious person, but I will say I have had an incredible amount of attorneys reach out to me wanting to take the case,” Meehan said.

Most people with these 'support' animals look like complete fucking idiots

So I can't bring my emotional support turkey for my thanksgiving flight this year?

Now we just need to charge fat people extra and we'll be in business.

It's like a lot of things, "Just look how extra special damaged I am!" I miss my dog when I'm gone too, but you gotta keep it together.

I was traveling in First Class wearing a suit about 2 years ago. Lady next to me had a dog too large for a cage but they let it under the seat. Dog shed white hair like a mofo on by dark suit and got slobber all over my right leg that was visible after it dried. The dog itself was friendly and the woman didn’t technically violate any rules but given the close quarters of people on planes, even in first class, there needs to be rules that preserve the ability of people to travel comfortably.
Ah the old dog in the plane slobber excuse hopefully that worked on your wife
