Puffy is a 100% creep and shit human being. But when it comes to his contributions to the music industry and pop culture people are underselling him quite a bit. No he's not a talented writer, rapper, producer, or performer. But what he is good at, or was at one time, is finding talent, packaging them, and presenting them to the world.
He's the one that found Jodeci and Mary J Blige in the early 90s and developed their sound & image. He's the one who took these R&B acts and dressed them up like rappers and gave them a more urban street image and sound. This made them marketable and appealing to the Hip Hop demographic as much as the R&B/Pop crowd. Before Puffy, Biggie was a hardcore street rapper with limited appeal. It was Puffy who forced him to make songs like 'Juicy' and 'Big Poppa' that allowed him to become a star.
Before Puffy, Mase was known as Murda Mase, a hardcore gangster rapper from Harlem. It was Puffy who forced Mase to drop the "Murda", put him in shiny suits, have him smiling and dancing around.
"I was Murda, P Diddy named me pretty/did it for the more now can you get wit me"
Puff was responsible for the careers of The Lox, 112, Lil Kim, Faith Evans, Total, Carl Thomas...all Gold and Platinum selling artists. He was behind huge one hit wonders like Craig Mack, G Dep, Shyne, Black Rob, and Yung Joc. And then of course he made himself a huge artist going 7x Platinum.
Puffy did alot.
