Economy EU orders Ireland to make Apple to pay up to 13 billion Euros

Without those foreign workers coming to Britain to pick fruit etc. that 64% drops even more. You haven't been self sufficient since the 1800's. ( why do you think 4000 ships per year filled with food left Ireland during the "famine" )

Cultural and national sovereignty is important, which is why I'm happy for Brexit to be a disaster for the UK, so it leads to a united Ireland.

League titles don't mean shite, nobody here really gave a fuck in 15. The All Ireland is the big prize.
I mean, a united thirty two is the dream, isn’t it? I suppose I’m speaking more from a place where I would hope, god forbid, if the EU did become too totalitarian, that Ireland would maintain that spirit of sovereignty and wouldn’t just go quietly with it. Not that I think it would actually happen. I was more replying to another poster that pure economics aren’t the sole reason to do something.

Well of course it’s the big one, and I wouldn’t mind seeing Waterford take it, just so long as the Cats don’t.

Scotland and Northern Ireland did not vote for Brexit, where's their sovereignty ? The EU are looking after Ireland's interests, hence why the border was one of the three points in the first phase.

Still 4 months before the championship throw in, as long as the games are good I'll be happy.

Irish Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe to Europe: "Hands off’ our corporate tax rate"
Saturday, January 27, 2018

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe has issued a strong “hands off” message to Europe over moves to force Ireland to increase its corporate tax rate.

Mr Donohoe, speaking from Davos, was responding to sharp attacks on Ireland’s tax regime and said he strongly rejected suggestions that Ireland is in a “race to the bottom”. He said Ireland’s 12.5% rate is competitive, transparent and stable and said he is not going to consider any move on that.

He said Ireland, like all EU countries, has the right to set its own tax rates and no change to that policy is envisaged.

He lashed out at French president Emmanuel Macron’s criticisms of Ireland when he was indicating his desire to lower France’s corporate tax rate: “When president Macron visited Davos his intention was to reduce French corporation tax. Why should competitiveness only be the prerogative of big countries.”

"Small open economies like Ireland also have to be competitive. What I emphasised is the legitimacy of what we are doing,” he told RTÉ Radio.

On a panel discussing tax avoidance, Nobel prize-winning economist, Joseph Stiglitz said that European commissioner Margrethe Vestager is a “champion” for pursuing the Apple tax case, in which her office found in 2016 Ireland provided €13bn of allegedly illegal tax aid. The Government and Apple are appealing the finding.

Mr Stiglitz said this State has been a key player in a “race to the bottom” and that mounting competition between countries, including a recent tax shift by the US, will not end until company tax rates “end at zero”.

“The contention that national tax policy should be set by national governments to allow them to fund national services for their own citizens is a proposition that has support all over the EU,” Mr Donohoe said.

Yeah, Apple can fuck right off. What investment have they made in the EU?
Same with all the other big US tech companies. The only thing they do is make US millionaires into multimillionaires.
They have so much money that the owners own private space agencies because they don't know what to do with their money.
They are only a danger to our economy, not a benefit. They just employee a few high paying employees the rest are minimum wage employees. That don't get any training or apprenticeship whatsoever.
And their products are made by poor Chinese people in factories that need suicide nets, so people don't kill themselves.
There is no long-term benefit in this. They are not a company like Siemens or Mercedes that trains its own workforce via apprenticeships and qualified workers.

And they don't want to pay any tax?
Give me a fucking break if the US had a proper political system the US and EU would work together so stuff like this wouldn't happen in the western world.
All those companies should pat 50% plus tax easy. They are just capitalist Americans taking advantage of the corrupt US system and trying to do the same in Europe.

No, they are capitalists who want to keep more of THEIR OWN MONEY and not be punished for being successful.

And US work with EU? Fuck them. I fear over taxing globalist governments over greedy capitalists any day.

Well, we have a social market economy (or whatever you call that in English).
Apple can fuck right off to the United States of No Health insurance.

Why should an American company only pay 0.05% and a local construction company or shop owner has to pay 25%+.
That has nothing to do with success. Its simply apple using its money to lobby politicians.
It is an unfair advantage.

Hey, I’m all for lowering the taxes on that shop owner too. Everybody should be able to keep more of their money. And fuck your socialism (Or social market. Whatever you Europeans call it).

I wonder if Ireland will consider getting out of the EU once this hits them.

Maybe Apple thinks about relocating to the UK since its no longer a member.

Apple already gets them English channel taxes...

Right? Who would want longer, healthier lives with better education and better, cheaper healthcare? Get that :eek::eek:gy Euro shit outta here!!!

You sure it’s cause of the healthcare or because many other differences between US and Europe. Diet and exercise being the main one.

And I’d rather be responsible for my own life and keep the government away from my money. Kinda why we broke away from Europe.

Yeah, pesky, evil things like banning substances still allowed across America, while educating their populace on health. Fucking fascists!! It's exactly like when we broke away from the English Empire in order to have less money of our own to take home!!!!

We broke away from England because our taxes were not being exchanged for representation. dur.

I’m all for education on diet and exercise but not the government controlling what we can and can’t put in our bodies.

And there are several reasons why we separated from England.

Yeah, fuck the government banning dyes that are known to cause cancer. Fucking tyrannical overreach!!!

Your talking about America breaking from England in the 18th century has no bearing on how they are kicking our ass when it comes to quality of life, and lifespan.

Quality of life statistics are super biased anyway. They base it all on how much shit the government pays for. I like my low taxes, gun rights, and not getting jailed for offending someone.

And the principles our country was founded on are not outdated just because they are from the 18th century. They stand the test of time.

Quality of life statistics like

Infant mortality
Complications during pregnancy
diabetes rates
heart disease rates
bankruptcies due to healthcare

and countless others are not biased.

The situation between post Brexit England and the British Empire are extremely different, as is America in it's relation to England. Your analogy is facile.

Whatever the issues may be, I don’t believe that government overreach is the solution.

And we are straying from the topic. I came in to talk about Apple in Ireland. I’ll never agree with punishing people for being financially successful.

Is it government overreach to ban harmful chemicals that cause people illnesses and death? Really?

You seem to have odd views on what punishing someone for success is. You want to talk about why we broke away with England, while disregarding the views of men like Jefferson on taxes. Jefferson found it just and prudent to have a progressive tax system.

Apple lists itself as an American company but pays virtually no tax here. This ain't just Apple either. Google. Amazon. Starbucks. These companies are paying lower rates than we are and many countries are pissed at them. I was watching them get grilled by Brits not too long ago. Starbucks said they aren't paying any taxes because they aren't making money in Britain. And the MPs laughed and are like, "Then why are you here?" They are so blatant about it. (the companies are blatant I mean)

None of our founding fathers envisioned the taxes we have today. Or raising taxes on the rich to pay an overblosted government. I suggest you move to Europe if you love their way of doing things.
