Marvel Studios' FANTASTIC FOUR Movie Gets a New Writer with Avatar: The Way of Water Scribe Josh Friedman

Marvel’s first family is getting a rewrite. Josh Friedman, who worked on Avatar: The Way of Water and developed Snowpiercer as a TNT television series, has been tapped to write the script for Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four.

Matt Shakman, who was the key director behind Marvel series WandaVision, is on board to helm the feature that has a release date of Feb. 14, 2025, and is set to kick off Phase 6 of its storytelling universe.

Fantastic Four was the heroic team that introduced readers, and the world at large, to Marvel Comics and ushered in the Marvel Age, as the self-generated hype machine described it in the 1960s.

Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer were the previous writers on the project, and Friedman’s hire signals a potential change in tone. Kaplan and Springer are neophyte scribes known for their comedy scripts. Among the works they have in development are the Rebel Wilson comedy K-Pop: Lost in America and Disaster Wedding, which has Palm Springs filmmaker Max Barbakow attached to direct.

Friedman, on the other hand, is a veteran of the sci-fi genre. He co-wrote War of the Worlds, the Steven Spielberg-Tom Cruise update on the H.G. Wells classic, and then acted as the writer-creator of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, the Terminator TV series that served as his first foray into the world of James Cameron. Years later, he would return to work on 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate and was one of the writers Cameron turned to for help in world-building and crafting stories for his multi-movie Avatar franchise.

The scribe is also the show co-creator of Foundation, the ambitious Apple series adapting the Isaac Asimov stories; the second season is due to debut later this year. And he adapted for the small screen Snowpiercer, TNT’s take on the Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi movie, although he left the show over creative differences.

Avatar 2 was a terrible story. Absolute dog shit. This is bad news.
It was basically a rehash of the first one just set on the water this time instead of the forest. Baffling as to why it was so popular.

They should let the fantastic four movie franchise die instead of looking for ways to make easy money.

They will either race or gender swap.

Or both.

Maybe Trans Latinx Ricardo Richards.

Got to admit, at this point I'm more entertained by Disney's casting ideas than the films they produce.

As if there was any doubt this was going to be a shitshow...

*4th Fantastic Four movie, as Hollywood has proven the other three times they're piss-poor at adapting that comic series.
*Its another new MCU franchise, and every new one they've added since Guardians has been shit.
*Wandavision showrunner is in charge of the re-write.

I'll be 100% real with everyone, I used to be really into comics in the 2000s. One supposedly extremely popular series was Fantastic Four, and I never got their appeal. None of their powers are particularly interesting and the drama between them is 'meh' at best, and their villains are Dr. Doom and.... who else?

They were created in the 60s, and their shelf life ended in the 80s at the latest.

So the only curiosity I have for this project is how shitty can it possibly will be.

Kinda doesn't bode well to be changing writers this late in the game? And, will no real casting news either.
Late? They start shooting in 2024, so like 6+ months. Also, this week they announced a new writer for Thunderbolts movie which starts shooting this June (but I think I saw mention that he was officially announced this week, he started writing/rewriting months ago).
Reed will be race swapped.
Seems like latest rumours that he is gonna be played by Krasinki.

I feel like FF is gonna race swap again, bomb again and then usher in the downfall of the MCU more so.
I really hope you are wrong. I was never a huge fan, but the first family deserves better.

Also I need to hear "it's clobbering time"

I feel to this day that Michael Chiklis is the best thing about any of the FF movies.

nah, i think this scene is the true diamond in the rough out of all the FF movies. too bad everything else was dogshit, but Doom’s hospital stroll is super legit vibes.
