PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN's Gore Verbinski to Direct X-Men Spinoff GAMBIT
Deadline reports that Gore Verbinski is making a deal to direct Gambit at Fox. The X-Men spinoff has been a high priority at the studio, since Channing Tatum stepped up to star in the film as Remy LeBeau, the suave mutant from New Orleans who can turn objects into projectiles. That includes a deck of cards.
Free Association’s Tatum and Reid Carolin are producing the film with X-Men overseers Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. Josh Zetumer wrote the script. The film formerly had Doug Liman and Rupert Wyatt attached, and the character was first seen in a cameo played by in a small dose by Taylor Kitsch in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The movie project comes as Fox has been expanding the big-screen presence of its X-Men properties, with 2018 seeing the release of New Mutants (set to open April 13), Deadpool 2 (June 1) and X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Nov. 2). Gambit currently has no release date.
Verbinski most recently directed A Cure For Wellness, but he’s adept at big scale films, having originated the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Doug Liman Exits Fox's GAMBIT to Direct Warner Bros.' JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK
Doug Liman is no longer directing Gambit. The Mr. and Mrs. Smith director has moved off Twentieth Century Fox’s X-Men spin-off, which still has Channing Tatum attached to star.
Liman is now attached to direct Justice League Dark, breathing new life into Warner Bros.' supernatural adventure project that will bring together heroes such as John Constantine, Deadman, Shade the Changing Man, Zatanna and Swamp Thing.
Insiders tell The Hollywood Reporter Fox is still intent on starting production in January and has Josh Zetumer on writing duties. A source describes the split as a “mutual parting of ways.”
A search is already underway for a new director to helm the project that tells of a New Orleans-based mutant with the power to manipulate kinetic energy and whose weapons include a staff and a deck of playing cards.
Liman signed onto the project in October 2015 after the departure of Rupert Wyatt. Gambit has seen its start date pushed several times — it was to have begun shooting in the fall of 2015, then early 2016. Script rewrites have been a recurring issue and earlier this year they pushed the start again to early 2017.
That delay left Liman to tackle another project, the small-scale psychological thriller The Wall set up at Amazon Studios, which he recently wrapped.
