International Global defence budget jumps to record high of $2440bn

We will likely never see it go down from here because weapons manufacturers have contracts that require the govt to spend x amount of money on weapons or they threaten to shut down or lay people off in the congressional districts harming the politicians chances at reelection. Of all the budgets I would like to see this one drop significantly.

And we all know Ukraine and Israel are the biggest expenses driving this up
Israel and Ukraine have almost nothing to do with it. Reality sinking in around China is driving global military spending up. To a smaller extent Russia.

Western leaders stupidly believed mixed/reliant economies would be a massive deterrence to large scale wars from dictatorships.

Russia shattered that thinking by invading a European country while being largely reliant on Europe to fuel their hydrocarbon heavy economy.

Smart people in the west are waking up to the reality that China's bluster and rhetoric around Taiwan may not be anywhere near as hollow as they thought it was, the economic deterrent is shit and they need to ramp up to realistically deter China.

Also we're seeing in Ukraine that if maneuver warfare doesn't provide a decisive victory we're likely pulled into a war of attrition with a 1.4B $20T+ manufacturing monster.

Which we don't want. At all. So we're spending domestically in a big way. Worst case scenario isn't some disorganized broke muslim anymore. Military spending reflects the current geopolitical situation.

Ukraine aid is a tiny % of this increase. Israel even less. The budgets of western countries show unequivocally that the spending is primarily on their own capabilities.

Germany for example is saying it's military budget might go from 1.5% to 3.5% to recover from years of neglecting it's military. That increase alone over the next 20 years will be larger than the entire world will give Ukraine.

Europe is following this across the board with domestic spending increases Poland in particular is going nuts and even outside of Europe we're seeing a ramp up of domestic spending. Fuck man even Canada is getting twitchy with it's spending. Outright saying China is the reason why.

Being the largest arms exporter in the world I find it hard to believe America won't pull a profit long term on Ukraine military aid. It's a live demonstration of the effectiveness of American weapons in a peer war while the western world is pulling their wallets out. Contracts last decades with upgrades, maint, replacements etc.

HIMARS for example has over 2000 orders in place and there'd be more if you could produce them fast enough.

Elect politicians who want to increase trade with democratic countries at the expense of china if you want any hope of decreasing military spending.

Norway to add millions more to historic increase in defense spending announced last month

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The Norwegian center-left government said Thursday that it wants to add 7 billion kroner ($630 million) to the Scandinavian country’s armed forces over the next 12 years amid increased tensions in the region.

The announcement came on top of plans announced last month of a “historic increase” of 600 billion kroner ($54 billion) in the oil-rich country’s defense budget over the same period.

“We must increase the operational capability of the Armed Forces,” Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, citing heightened tensions in the region as the reason for the boost.

Gahr Støre said Thursday that the combined budget increase meant that Norway would be able to reach NATO’s goal of military spending of 2% of each member country’s GDP this year. In 2024, the Scandinavian country’s defense budget is expected to increase to 104 billion kroner ($9.4 billion).

Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum called it “a strong growth” and said it was “a necessary investment to strengthen our freedom.”

Gahr Støre heads a coalition that includes his own social democratic Labor party and the left-leaning Center Party. He is expected to win support for the proposal in the 169-seat Storting assembly. No date for a vote was set.

On Tuesday, party leaders in the Norwegian parliament announced that the Scandinavian country was donating 7 billion kroner to Ukraine as part of a five-year support package. That comes on top of the 75 billion kroner ($6.8 billion) which Norway already has said it will donate, making it one of the world’s biggest donors to war-torn Ukraine.

- Money investiment. USA will maker the double, but for some reason doesnt spend on his on population!

Imagine the good we could collectively do if that money were invested in clean energy and social infrastructure.

We have everything we need to create a better world. It’s right at our fingertips.

Sad

Amazingly enough a huge part of that 2.4 trillion dollars will be coming to US defense industries. Lockheed has a backlog of HIMARS orders for years as well as F35's.

It's not expensive because it needs to be, it's expensive because the nature of the industry allows these companies to charge whatever they want. The markup on military equipment is insane. I've done some consulting work for military contractors earlier in my career, and it's a well known and open joke in the industry that you can charge whatever you want for military engineering work. When the project is confidential the public doesn't get to know the details of what costed what and why, and no politician wants to be seen as someone who don't support the troops, so they'll happily hand over more and more of our tax dollars to these companies.

Yeppers. It's a fantastic business filled with corrupt profit maximizing folks who talk partriotism and supporting our troops lol.

Hillary Clinton supporters must be calling that dude a Putin sympathizer for pointing out the absurdity of those prices.

There’s also the political bend- when Obama tried to keep the military budget the same instead of increasing it 2.3% annually he was painted as “cutting the military budget”.

Politicians on both sides of the isle know that it’s good for their campaigns to have an aggressive military budget and strategy. It’s insane
