The polio vaccine story is more involved than is typically told. The story of sister Elizabeth Kenny has all but forgotten today but she was curing polio patients and was quite popular. Hollywood made a movie about her polio work which was a best seller.
Sister Kenny was hated by the medical establishment at the time. She went against prevailing treatments. She was showing that health care workers were harming patients with their treatment.
So what did sister Kenny do different? Instead of placing polio patients limbs into braces as most health care workers did at the time, she exercised polio patients limbs. Her exercise treatment typically worked, with the polio patient regaining the ability to move around without braces.
Today sister Elizabeth Kenny is known as the founder of physical therapy.
