As an European that thing always puzzled me. It's like when students make it to college they magically become gifted and shit.

well, I mean Oxford exists.

In general its because americans are charged up the butt for uni, and tourist students are charged even more.
All the best teachers from all over the world therefore go to american schools

K - 12 schools in the US are not all equal. The school system I went to for K-12 offered opportunities. I decided to not take any advantage of those opportunities and just coasted. Then in my junior year of HS I decided I wanted to become an engineer. I scored high on my SAT/ACT and ended up getting a BS in Electromechanical Engineering minoring in Physics and applied mathematics.

The US public school system is however run by the US government and will be flawed until it is privatized. I was fortunate enough that my family moved out of the ghetto when I was 5 years old. My sister was 9 years old and was already getting picked on by some gangs. She was also the only white person in her school and was picked on for that as well, even by the teachers.

Because many students don't give a shit about education because it is not their culture. Period. No one will call it that out of feat of not being PC. It is a culture/value thing and not a skin color thing.
If you look up to ignorant gangsters and don't give a shit about school...then guess what??? It is teaching and learning not fucking magic.

Public schools here are fine. There are just more dumb motherfucking assholes than ever.

This is not a PC answer and I'm sure a ton of people will be "offended" but its because the statistics are skewed by minority/urban schools. Majority black schools are hell holes full of ignorant assholes who can barely read and they are proud of that fact. Its "cool" and "hip" to be a stupid ass :eek::eek::eek::eek:. Then you add the flood of third world illegals and single-wide trailer trash whites who all seem to follow the same culture now...

eww no.

the best countries in the world have mainly public education.

GTFO of here suggesting all public education should be privatized.
Thats a straight path to a 5% literacy rate.

Not all schools in America are mediocre. I truly believe the really bad ones bring down the generalized total of things like tests and whatnot. There are some really good schools in America, but lots of bad ones, as well.

You socialist Canadians think your healthcare system is good too. Then when shit hits the fan you end up getting treatment in the US.

A privatized voucher system is leaps and bounds ahead of public school.

because we pay tens of thousands of dollars that we dont even have to go to college

its not that our students are that amazing. our universities are because they have funding to do research and provide good facilities. a lot of our top universities have a huge international population

no it isn't as proven by literally everywhere in the world.

And yeah, my healthcare is great. Never not been able to do anything I needed to, for free.

And I get literally 80% of all food I have to eat for free.
so there

the students are amazing.
Because they come from japan, china and korea.
and India, if they are lucky enough to get in.

This isn't directed at you in anyways because Chinese students always have this reputation of being smart, but the whole time I have ever been in college it was always the Chinese students who were caught cheating. Always boggled my mind because of their reputation.

i understand it though.
they have so much pressure because of other chinese super kids to get not just straight A's, but straight 99% in everything.
Thats the kind of thing that makes you cheat.

which is sad if true, because african students in africa are some of the hardest working students I've witnessed.

of course there are hundreds of african americans who end up as doctors and other things as well.

The public schools are not problematic because they are government run. The quality of the public schools vary greatly depending on their location. In fact having the government mandate a curriculum helps prevent schools from omitting things or teaching whatever they want, improving education to a certain extent. Affluent neighborhoods with high taxes and a good education budget have public schools that rank very high..... its the inner city schools that are usually horrible.

In those schools, many of the students attending have parents of low socioeconomic and educational background who don't care about how their kids do in school. As a result the teachers are basically glorified baby-sitter ring masters, wasting most of the day trying to keep the kids under control, which ruins the opportunity for any good students to learn. That combined with low education budgets in those areas makes good teachers go elsewhere, exacerbating the problem. It forces any parents who live in those areas and care about their kids education to either move to an area with a better school system (most likely with higher taxes), or pay to send their kids to a private school in the area.

college football and the networks buying the rights, government grants to subsidize research, outrageous tuition costs and competition. Basically the answer is; money

Public schools are not run by the US government. They are run by local school districts and school boards with state funding and oversight, and minimum requirements set by the federal DOE. As prime an example of "local control" as there is. If the schools in your area suck, blame the school board, not the big bad federal government.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't public school funding in the US tied to property tax revenues?

Because Asians. If there's no race quota there would be more Asians.
