Is Ortega a gatekeeper ?

Bjj guy that lands an occasional hail mary.
He is 30, near his prime, his striking will get a bit better. But there will be a rapid decline due to the damage he takes.

What he really needs to do is improve his takedowns. Everything else is fine. If he can get the fight to the ground at will we won't lose. Currently he takes too much damage getting it there and as a result isn't as dangerous as he could be. In the volk fight he was compromised by the head clash and still pushed volk right to the end. He was clearly a worthy contender who could have easily won. I think he will learn and beat volk if he gets him again. I think he "wears" damage more than other fighters which makes the damage seem worse than it is at times.

In boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts, a gatekeeper is a skillful and well-regarded fighter, but one who does not have the popularity or brilliance of a title contender. They are considered to be a cut above most journeymen. A gatekeeper will often have an impressive record in terms of wins versus losses but will have a difficult time getting people behind them and especially obtaining promotion.

Notable MMA examples[edit]

Bisping was a gatekeeper but stayed close to contention got a lucky matchup and rose to the occasion. Some of Bisping losses were good performances. Loss to R Evans close and when Rashad was hot went on to get the belt. Chael was close to a draw. Being a gatekeeper is still quite good. Not sure he will get a belt Diaz didn’t but they r big draws putting on good fights making a living.

The only way he could be a gatekeeper is he started taking tickets at the building entrance.

As others have said, a gatekeeper loses to contenders.

Ortega hasn't.
