Is Pereira more talented than Adesanya or just a bad matchup?

Perreira is a better specialist, in striking terms he is a snipe

He has shown higher fight iq than izzy now twice...in their second fight he lulled izzy into brawling with him which opened up that rushing left hook from hell.

In this 3rd fight in mma, izzy displayed poor fight iq when backing up constantly to the outer ring where he got himself ko'd. Plus the backing up in a straight line at times.

Alex just has his number.

Your absolutely right. Every jab and straight izzy threw seemed to land and with power but he still ended up against the fence consistently. He had the weapons to keep pereira at a distance but still kept getting cornered

Israel is the more overall skilled MMA fighter, but his fatal flaw of moving back in a straight line would cause him to lose to Pereira 9/10 times probably.

came in lighter though
guess that counts for something right?

I don’t think his usual weigh would have done it either. I don’t even understand how Alex makes 185 honestly, he’s got the frame of a big LHW easily.

Izzy should be the superior fighter by being more technical, having the overall more complete striking arsenal, but as they say power is the great equalizer

That’s should be what obviously sets them apart, but IMO it’s actually the fact hat Alex is much more durable and able to come back from nearly being finished.
technical just meant point fighting and running away, scoring 10 pt rounds while being stalked in the cage fearing for your life

Alex is the better striker. Izzy has far better wrestling.

People act like Izzy is some kind of wizard, but he lost 1/3 of the rounds he fought (9 out of 27 on the score cards) since beating Whittaker the 1st time.

they both should be fighting in LHW, izzy barely makes the cut himself

bad matchup - if he was better he wouldnt be dropping rounds

Alex took the 2nd fight on 10 days notice soon after surgery and is obviously still green in wrestling, which allowed Izzy to win rounds 3 and 4.

I like both guys, can it really be called a bad match-up? Two highly skilled fighters, it's a fact that Adesanya almost got the finish in the two last fights, and were up on the scorecards.. It's not like Peirera goes out and destroys him. In my opinion it's a toss-up, at the level these two are, all it takes is one little mistake.

Im so sick of immidiate rematches, even if Adesanya deserves it for cleaning the division up until now.. I want Peirera vs Costa/Whittaker and Adesanya vs Chimaev (if he will fight at MW) or Hermansson.

If Izzy would have learned from the 3rd round and kept using his wrestling I think he could have increased his chances a lot more. From what it looked like it seems like Alex can’t grapple very well, even on the feet Izzy was beating him in the tie ups with his over unders.

I think Pereira just has more power, the striking is pretty much on par. I think a good wrestler gives Pereira problems though. Someone like Vettori or even Whittaker if he mixes it up could cause him problems

Alex took round 4 off and got a 2nd wind by the 5th. Izzy did get the under hooks with the hands locked in round 5, but wasn't able to get him down.

I expect Pereira to train that position a lot for the rematch. As well as getting up obviously.

Izzy salty fans love to mention how much bigger Alex is, but they seem to overlook the even bigger rift between the two....experience. Izzy has WAY more fights in kickboxing and mma.

izzy will never win against pereirra, alex was in his head before the fight, now he is a nightmare for izzy with a better peirerra in the next fight.

Agreed, but Izzy was getting under hooks and controlling him with over under’s all throughout the fight. I also expected Alex to have practiced it a lot more leading up, maybe he did and just still needs time to get better.

What was more concerning was his inability to get up, he had terrible mat awareness and couldn’t grapple out of something as simple as a wrist lock. Anyone who was watching like Rob should note this and base their game plan on taking this guy down. If Izzy was able to easily hold him down imagine what a good wrestler with good ground and pound or someone with good submissions can do.

No, Izzy clearly looks like a MW, a big MW but his frame is not as big as Alex’s.
they're both 2 inches taller than the rest of the division

you can't just act like izzy magically fits in the realm of MW and alex is some kind of abberation when they are both comically tall and lengthy for the div
poatan is just slightly larger, and clearly izzy can't take what he was dishing out to smaller dudes

Are we strictly talking about height and length here? Cause to me that is only 1 factor that entails size. Izzy might be tall but he is skinny, he doesn’t have the frame and muscle mass that other much larger fighters do. He also doesn’t balloon up after weight in’s like other fighters, meanwhile guys like Costa and Alex regain close to 20lbs come fight night.

So how can you say Alex is only slightly larger when he has close to 10-15 lbs on Izzy? I’m assuming you don’t know what a 10lb difference feels like when facing an equally skilled opponent?
