Joking During Rolling: Okay or Not?

Because (Caliber can correct me if I'm wrong) and it's been stated multiple times. What people who don't like joking are referring to is the passive aggressive stuff
But in the post I originally quoted that was not what was stated and is part of a separate conversation in this thread. I only took argument with the guy claiming it's to bring you down. In my experience it's usually when I'm rolling with white belts who are getting smashed all day and try to stay in good spirits or poke fun at themselves.

We should change this thread to awesome joke/insults you can do during submissions 101.

Set up a sweep and say 'UHOH!' as you hit the sweep
Noogie people when they turtle
Noogie people when they're in scarf hold
Make porn music noises in North/South
Stop and make motorcycle noises when you do the motorcycle pass
Replicate the gurgling noises the hero young guys make trying to get out of collar chokes
Apologize while crossfacing, especially in a foppy British or Canadian accent
Do the Anderson Silva bow between every roll reset
Kiap every time you reset at Judo in the most melodramatic way possible
Every time you can cheek-to-cheek nuzzle your buddies is a good time to do that
Giggle when weak people attempt cross-collar chokes from guard
Learn how to fart during Neon Belly practice without shitting your pants
Show up to gyms in a two stripe white belt where you know the upper rank but only like 2 of the lower belts and ask if it's karate class, then just shit. stomp. people.
Starting humming 'Sound of Silence' when people fight your blood chokes
Roll with the spazzy white belts and submit them with pro wrestling submission holds
If you're bros, and I mean pals with someone, blast ass while triangle choking them. Stink 'em out.
Step on people's feet, wait for them to pull back, sweep that foot

I don't think it's trying to bring you down. I think it's trying to either reduce the intensity of the roll, or to try and justify why they're getting beaten badly by purposefully displaying that they aren't taking it that seriously (e.g. 'sure you're kicking my ass, but it doesn't matter because I'm not trying that hard as evidenced by my joking'). I think it's much, much more about them than about me.

Worth noting that I've only had this happen a couple of times, in a good gym it's basically non-existent even among the white belts. Generally in my gym the only time people tell jokes is before and after class, between rolls, when coaching a roll, or maybe right after a sub when there's a break in the action. None of which I have any problem with, and do myself from time to time.

this thread got some strong emotions for what seems like a petty subject to give that much thought to.

at the end of the day, do you. if ppl dont like it, it is their problem.

Hmm, sometimes it is okay. But as far as joking goes, I only giggle or say something like 'lol, or not', if I fall off and badly fail at a move. Other than that, no.

I sometimes talk when roll. Not
Too much tbh. Just word like "oh sh**", "sike", "porra", and " gotcha". For the most part I'm quiet.

Neither is it true that when myself or one of the guys of trained with for six years makes a wise cracks while rolling are trying to bring each other down. And I think people who are accusing others of doing so only believe that because it hurts their own ego when their opponent can be light hearted while training.

There's a difference between being lighthearted and interrupting practice.

I mean, we're human. If something funny happens, we laugh.

I'm not even complaining about joking in class. I never have. Someone asked what we thought and I gave my answer.

It's not projection. I've actually heard people (more then once) say they like joking so the roll is less serious. That's their prerogative. I don't care what people do with their rolling time really. Makes no difference to me. When the clock is ticking crossface is still coming. One-liner or not.

When rolling with a new white and doing something crushing like crossfacing, knee on belly, etc. ill stop..look them in the eye and say "sucks doesn't it."

Some people joke around in national team judo and wrestling workouts. They also go very hard, and show no mercy. The two issues are independent.

It depends on how well they know each other - and how much respect they have for each other; two guys who've been at that level for years, with a lot of respect for each other, will often crack jokes while doing randori/scrimmaging. But someone just visiting (that would be me back in the day) would be well advised to keep their comments/wise cracks to themselves ... you have to earn that right among high level competitors.

I talk mad shit and it's usually all good. Someone said it earlier, people take their training way too seriously and forget to have some fun.
