Judge: Apple must help US hack San Bernardino killer's phone

It isn't about what you have to hide, it is about how this tool can be used.

You know maybe Anthony Wiener sent a dic pic, to 40,000 Twitter followers twice, and maybe his phone was hacked.

The fact that it is possible that his phone was hacked, and that a sitting government official was removed for being framed, should make you realize this isn't just about you.
I know it's not about me. It's about using this tool to keep America safe. A terrorists phone could provide info that could help catch other terrorists.

I think you'd be singing a different tune if you or someone you knew was a victim of a terrorist attack.

From my understanding, the backdoor will ONLY work for that particular phone and will require manual upload. The judge even ordered that the software to have some sort of identifier so that it could never be used on other Apple devices.

If it is created, what are the odds the scientists working for the Feds won't be able to create their own similar software , absent the restriction.

I can't believe the people in this thread. Conspiracy, paranoia, and siding with a dang greedy corporation over your own dang neighbors, aka fellow common citizens.

Government isn't asking for anything extraordinary.

"Oooh 1984". I am only glad that the people by and large and common sense dictates that Apple is in the wrong.

I really wouldn't.

I understand that I can be hit by a car, or have a plane engine fall out of the sky on my head. There is no such thing as being safe.

We could give up every constitutional right we have, and you still wouldn't be safe.

The fact remains that you had no response to the idea that these systems could be used for control over powerful people.

the govt already has all the data they need. This confrontation with Apple is just a sleight of hand to fool the masses with elaborate corporate showmanship. It gives the public just enough leeway to doubt the omniscient powers of the panapticon that is our government.

That was my first thought as well. I take these tussles with a grain of salt.

$10 bucks if Bernie came out against Apple half the Sanders fans in here including Forktrot who called most Americans "pieces of sh#t" would be singing a different tune.

Sanders as it stands said there is a middle ground and I am sure in time he will see the light and realize the necessity for Apple to comply.

I also don't get liberal love of Apple. They are an exploitative greedy corporation so to hell with them. Great day when they fall if ever. Or do some on the far left think only banks can be corrupt and not a tech giant who spies on people like Apple where there products are made in sweat shops?

Weakest argument I've ever heard. Comparing car accidents and plane accidents to incidents of terror or the promotion of hate which can in action lead to human barbarity, genocide, war And terror is ridiculous.

I'd suggest America get with the program in regards to hate laws and proper gun control as well. Germany despite all its flaws has taken the proper route in these regards.

That was my first thought as well. I take these tussles with a grain of salt.

But how? Government already has the right to look at everything. People are just blowing this out of proportion. And it's always the same groups.

As you would say... It's not about you. And of course no matter what we aren't safe. Catching terrorists makes us safer. That's a fact. What isn't a fact is your idea that "these systems" could be used against "powerful people".

Honestly man I think you're either crazy or full of shit if you think you wouldn't be singing a different tune if you were a victim. That phone could have the number of some guy in Yemen who helped plot an attack on you & you're going to tell me the FBI shouldn't access the phone. Makes no sense.

There are laws (and loopholes) that the government has to navigate, but breaking the laws in a round about way (CIA/NSA fronts, data sharing agreements across borders, etc) is nothing new, so I wouldn't say they have a 'right' but surely they get more than people think they do.

The Big Brother surveillance grids are being built regardless of terrorism, but tromping out these stories when the government has a 'legitimate terror concern' is a good way to make the case and normalize the idea of governments gaining access to devices. Eventually they can 'come out of the closet' and just openly do it.

Liberalism is a mental illness

I wonder if anyone who works in cryptography is siding with the FBI on this case.

In my opinion it's largely a fear belonging to an older cold war ideology. The good news is common sense is winning out amongst the younger crowd and I mean under 18 crowd.

If you have nothing to hide like kiddie porn then nothing to fear. And FBI isn't even trying to snoop on you like that. They just simply want access to prized information that corporations are keeping to themselves. Plus we have checks and balances so this can't be compared to something like the USSR.

Not everything you hide is something you are doing wrong. Compromising encryption puts IP at risk as well.

TELL me I am not right though?

I mean seriously. I could so easily see people on the far left crying about "evil Corporation is keeping prized information for their own benefits".

If this was Goldman Sachs instead of Apple you can bet the farm that people would be as you put it "singing a different tune".

OoOHhh!! But the masses of hive minded consumers regard Apple as some loving entity cause it feeds their addictions.

The Big Brother system of today has far more information on tap about citizens than the USSR system could have, and it is intended to grow continuously until privacy is just some relic that crazy grandpa said once when he had been drinking.

Apple I'm sure is in bed with the larger system already though, but they do have appearances to maintain.

I think there is nothing more weak minded, than changing your opinion based on anecdotal personal experience. I didn't think anything different about Ray Rice when i saw the video of him knocking that girl out. I don't need to see the video to understand it, which is exactly what you are inferring here, that only if you experienced it could you ever understand it.

For some I'm sure this is true, I am not one of those people.

FYI, I read No Where to Hide by Glenn Greenwald.

I have no illusions of the relationship these information companies and our government have, that has existed since the days of Ma Bell.

You are quick to read things how you want to interpret them.

My argument is that safety is an illusion.

Therefor, anyone willing to give up their rights for the appearance of safety is buying a false bill of goods.

Hate laws, GUN CONTROL, and that campaign finance doesn't create corruption are 3 positions now, that you are so outnumbered on, that I am impressed by your ability to hold so strongly to these views, when 3/4 of Americans disagree with you.

Obviously if they just see the news headline "Apple refuses unlock phone, hampering terrorist investigation!" Then they're going to side with the government. Surveys like this are worthless in this case as the average man won't understand why Apple is refusing.
