#JudoForTheWorld Mongolia

Nice video, I like this series of Judo for the World. I hope to see a Judo for the World in Georgia.

Mongols have tough lifes, but their winters at -20 got nothing on our -30s ;)

They do a great job on these videos and I love the fact that the IJF live stream all of their major tournaments on YouTube for free.

That dude in the video, the Olympic champ, doesn't he have a strong wrestling background as well? I remember years ago reading about the rules in judo being changed bc someone started winning big tournaments with wrestling-type moves.

It's a myth that needs to die.

What?

Even if that is the case it doesn't change the fact that this myth is just that, a myth. The rules were not changed because of people winning so much with a double or single.

they were changed to avoid 'stalling', which didn't stop people from spamming drop throws and immediately turtling, and it just happened to come on the heels of a few years where eastern european and mongolian wrestlers were absolutely dominant.

i'll say this til i turn blue - Teddy Riner would not have gone undefeated for a decade if someone could've just tackled him.

So there is some truth to my question/comment? Because I watched the Mongolian win the gold against Japan and he was faking double legs 10 seconds into the match and won with a clear as day double leg takedown.

The Mongolian definitely knows Judo, that is obvious, but he won that match with a double leg. Are you saying its a myth that he won with wrestling or its a myth that rules were changed to eliminate freestyle type attacks in judo?

i mean what's the current justification for keeping them out? 'dynamic and exciting?'

yeah, nothin dynamic or exciting about te guruma, big ol suplexes, or matt hughes-type double legs....

A couple of things:

Tüvshinbayar wasn't some freestyle wrestler, specialising in double legs. He had a traditional wrestling background, like so many Mongolian judoka do, where they wear those tiny jackets and undies.

And the IJF has such a history, even now, of gut reactions. Tüvshinbayar's gold medal(?) match was so excruciating, they just got rid of leg grabs. Instead, they should have addressed stalling tactics that were happening through all of judo.
