Muay Thai Gym Q&A

Good training, but laidback. If you dont want to live far from gym, blooms and rompo mansion are pretty good.

Thanks, hopefully inprove my clinch game as I been told they train it alot.

Hoping a few other foreigners there as Im going solo, and would be good to meet new people to train with.

Found a decent hostel online 2 min away from the MRT in Klong Toey so booked a few nights already.

What is your weight?

Where did you train before in Thailand?

Do you speak Thai, Khmer, or Lao?

Are you planning in sticking with 96 Penang or will you travel around to other gyms?

Okey, first post here for me! I've been in thailand for about a month now, just travelling around, but took my first two muay thai classes this week, one in chiang mai(cant remember the gym name, but the training was great) and one in bangkok(at chacrit or whatever the name was but the training was pretty lazy, only one hour session and overprized). Came to vietnam for 10days now, but after that im going back to thailand and would love to dedicate the 2 weeks what i have left there to just train muay thai, hopefully in bangkok area, but places like hua hin works too. Im looking for a place which is good for beginners, but im not looking to get fit(eventho it will come along), just want to learn as much about the technique as i can. I bet you guys have some great gyms to tell me about so i will listen.

Weigh 60kg,
I speak a tiny bit of thai (can just about get by), and yes planning on staying with 96 Penang but also depends on funds, some reviews I have read say they charge 400bt a session but have also read one that said he was charged 1000bt for the session, which I can no way afford.

Hoping they will let me pay for 2 weeks first so I can get a feel for the gym, dont wanna train longterm somewhere I hate.

Training at 96 Penang should be 400baht per day as was recently clarified on their facebook page.

Thanks but even if I showed the thais their FB page they will still probably look at me and say "1000 baht"

I love Thailand and muay thai but the way they try to bleed foreigners dry is really fukcing annoying

Im a budget traveller ffs

Hi!
Im going with my girlfriend for a 3 week holiday to koh Samui and I'm going to squeeze in some training. So we

Where did you read that?

I have trained three months at Santai Muy Thai near Chiang Mai. I am looking to train in Koh Samui for one month at the end of which i would like to fight. I am in decent shape but not conditioned for a fight. Does anyone out there in cyberspace have experiences to share?

Alright, so after some research i booked two weeks at Sitmonchai gym! Read only good things about the gym and after chatting with abigail via email it was pretty easy choise.

Still a bit terrified, because im almost a beginner.

Any tips or advice for the.. well whole experience? What should i bring with me? They said i dont need any gear, like gloves or shinpads, but anything else i should take with me?

Also, booked a roundtrip flight to visit Cambodia after my month is full in Thailand so i have a full month to train after that too before going back to Finland if im still up to it..

If you are that new I'm not sure what to say other than just go to class as often as you can. You will learn a lot through consistency. Listen to your body if you feel fatigued and take a day off when you need. Luckily in Thailand gyms operate 6 days a week so missing a day to recover is no big deal, you'll be back in the gym the next day. I will be in Thailand in a month, will also stop in Cambodia. Spending 5 weeks total, but unfortunately not training for as long as I originally planned. However, i'll tour around a bit so it will be a great trip regardless. Will like go back on October or November just to train also.

On Sitmonchai from their facebook page:

Another piece of bittersweet news for Sitmonchai Gym is that our very own multiple times champion Pornsanae Sitmonchai will be joining the league of Muay Thai champions at Singapore's Evolve MMA. Pornsanae is a 2x Lumpinee Champion, a 1x Rajadamnern Champion, a Lumpinee Fighter of The Year, a WMC World Champion, 2x Omnoi Champion, a Channel 7 Champion, and Thailand National Champion. He's a big part of the heart and soul of Sitmonchai and we'll miss him dearly but this is a great opportunity for him to teach what he does so well. Once his contract ends, he'll be back at Sitmonchai Gym for good, tending to his beloved roosters and teaching students how to be badass.

Been looking at AKA in Phuket. Thinking of going for 2 months.

Does anyone here personally have any reviews?

Looking for a good and honest camp on the island for an Australian, for a fortnight of intensive training. Any recommendation?

anyone been to rattachai gym in phuket? also, any recommendations for gyms in chiang mai for a few days training?

I have been doing some training in Thailand within past couple of months.

I started muay thai about 2 years ago, took it seriously pretty much 6 or 7 months ago, and am primarily a grappler. But I really fell in love with muay thai and nyc was cold so I decided to get out and train some.

In bangkok I trained with Poptheeratham.
Structure: Run one of three routes, a 20-25 minute short one, 35-40 minute medium one, or about an hour long one.
Very quick shadow boxing, then either you work with Kru Ni on technique/shadow for a while then pads.
Pad rounds were random, sometimes I would do one 15 minute round it seemed like, and then a shorter second round. Sometimes 3 rounds of about 5 minutes (don't know if they were timed).
Then kick bag for a while, and spar or clinch.

This gym was SUPER technical. It seemed that everything I did was corrected. I learned a lot of tricks and the fighters were very good. Also they have you shadow and hit pads from both southpaw and orthodox which was good and unique.

I lived on camp site, and I didn't miss a training and worked hard but ended up gaining weight! This is due to the food being so good that they make for you if you stay on camp.

Now I am at Sinbi in phuket, some people run and others just take class. Class starts with 10-15 mins of skipping or running around the gym, then a group stretch, then two rounds of shadow boxing. While you shadow box, sometimes a coach will come up to you and have you hit into their palms and work on some technique.

After, it is very structured. People separate to either do pads or do bag work. 5 three minute rounds, everything by the clock. After you are done with one or the other, you switch. After finishing both, you do one of the three : clinch, spar, or work calisthenics / technique with other people.

The training is good and very cardio intensive. They are extremely structured and have like 15+ coaches. Mostly foreigners though, a couple of thai boys sparring sometimes too.

Hope this helps some people!
