This is exactly what one of the conclusions of the Mueller report was. That Russia is continuing decades long campaign of sowing discord in America except now it's easier thanks to the internet. The ability to massively target a large portion of the population is invaluable to an operation like that.
 
I doubt they care who's elected - they just want you to know that they're meddling.

The Americans don"t understand some things:

1. EU are the richest of Europe
2. Russia as GDP per capita is poorer than the last countries of the EU
3. In Europe there are a lot more countries than in the EU, but are poorer and have big discrepancy economically.
4. Russia is not very important at EU level, just at NATO military level (Russia is not very relevant to the EU level, sadly)

5. Russia does not want to join the EU, it is dumb, fully ran by oligarchs. Otherwise the Russian people are very smart, but indoctrination can get all of us anyway. Russia makes fun of the EU on TV, showing only the best things in the former Eastern Bloc countries. They mock Poland and Romania who are East European tigers now. Russia is more Euroasian than European these days now unfortunately. And I have big respect for the Russian culture and history. Well history before 1920 or so.
 
I don't know if Russia is relevant to the point where Americans should care about what they're concerned about or not. Do Americans ask themselves who the Indian or Brazilian government thinks should be their President? Probably not, yet those countries are probably as relevant or more relevant than Russia at this point.

Russia's economic output is low and their military is contained.
