Oscar De La Hoya: ‘MMA fighter pay gets me sick to my stomach’

Didn't he pay Spike O'Sullivan $20k for being on the undercard of the Velez/Garcia fight on ESPN where Velez only made $50k and Garcia $25k for headlining a card on major television?

The UFC pays better than pro boxing overall. There really isn't any boxing promotion that guarantees the money that the UFC does.

There have been guys on ESPN Friday night fights making peanuts, literally hundreds of dollars. You don't see that in the UFC.

But in MMA overall, like boxing, there isn't much money to be made.

That's flat out not true. Maybe for the absolute bottom of rung, but who cares about them.

Lets compare TJ Dillashaw and Gervonta Davis (the boxer calling out TJ).

As a PPV headliner, TJ only made 380k. Davis was the freaking undercard of an Adrian Broner headliner and still made a comparable 350k. In fact look at the purses of the entire boxing card:
Adrien Broner $1 million, Jessie Vargas $500,000, Jermall Charlo $500,000, Hugo Centeno Jr. $235,000, Gervonta Davis $350,000, Jesus Cuellar $350,000.

The only boxer that is possibly more known than TJ Dillashaw is Broner (who made more than double TJ on a non-ppv show). Jessie Vargas who is a complete non-draw made 500k.

Obviously yall will bring up undisclosed "backroom bonuses" (which is an absolute joke imo), but in terms of disclosed pay, UFC purses are a joke.

Trust me, I hope more than anything that UFC fighters get a lot more than their disclosed pay, because it makes me absolutely sick that somebody like Rory Mcdonald only made 120k for his performance against Robbie Lawler 2, but hoping based on the generosity of some scumbags like WME-IMG or Dana White is completely idiotic.

Fucked up, true. But they're technically not 'UFC fighters' and the fights are 'exhibitions'.

I agree it's not cool, but I don't know how that works either.
Yeah I just always wondered what kind of mileage 4 fights in that kind of time frame does. Some of them even have 5 depending on the show format. I understand you want to evaluate talent, but making someone go through that much can take them out of their prime or take years off their career

"Golden Boy" p4p gayest name for a company in combat sports

Fighters make what they are worth in UFC. If u draw u get paid ....... if u don't draw doesn't matter if ur champ or not u get paid accordingly. UFC pays way better than boxing when u look at the bottom end instead of the top.

Conor , brock, Honda EARN they draw they make UFC money hence they get paid most.

Called earn ur pay. Conor is going to sell around 2.5 mil buys........ to put in perspective he might in October in one ppv out sell all other ppvs combined in 18.

Tired of the socialist approach hand outside n shit u want the money separate it self an earn it. Be entertaining, talk massive shit, back up shit talk with viscousness.

“I’m really looking forward to getting into the MMA world and making sure that these fighters are being compensated well,” De La Hoya told Fight Hub TV. “Because look, we risk our lives up in the ring. So fighters should be compensated extremely well.”

“The current structure is terrible,” De La Hoya said. “I’ve been talking to many, many fighters in the MMA, and it’s ridiculous on what they get paid. It’s crazy. It gets me sick to my stomach.”

“I’m gonna start Golden Boy MMA for a reason, and that’s gonna start with Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz to pay them correctly. To pay them what they deserve.”

<{titihmm}>

Waiting to see how this turns out. Easy to say when it isnt him doing the paying so far.
Lets see when he comes into the game.

It’s a noble sounding idea, like universal basic income, but when you start taking away from those who actually generate income to those who don’t, shit goes bad very quickly. I’m in favour of limits though. No matter how good a boxer you are you don’t deserve 1 billion dollars. You simply don’t. This excess is the cancer of capitalism. Capitalism needs to be tempered just the tiniest bit.

It's true, most of champions doesn't even earn one million per fight which is absolutely ridiculous. Looking forward to see what he can do to change the game.

Maybe you should read my post again and see why none of these scenarios matter.

newsflash, MMA doesn't pay much

Cool agree in general even if I don't think his intentions are so good and he won't pull it off.

PS: Fix those purses on them first fighters on boxing cards it's embarrassing to have them at 3k , 4k etc.

it's not noble to give good for nothing people money for free. also there is no problem in fighters getting a billion dollars, they worked hard for it. if you feel annoyed by it you should start donating half of your money, because compared to you many people get paid peanuts everywhere in the world

De La Hoya is right.

De La Hoya came from boxing, a sport where boxers get a huge chunk of the pie......He doesn't understand how UFC Fighters, who do something very similar are only getting a fraction.

We need to respect UFC fighters!!!!!!!!

He'll pay the headliners and the guys on the undercard will get less than UFC minimum.

Maybe you should read my post again and see why none of these scenarios matter.

Yeah i read your post, and those scenarios are literally the only ones that matter.

Nobody gives a fuck about what some bums make on FnF or the non televised card of a UFC card. Those guys are almost part time fighters and are lucky to be making a check fighting.

He had me till Tito and Chuck.

Those mother fuckers have been overpaid for some time. Especially Tito.

Are you delusional or what????

In the UFC if you get a 1.5 million ppv it’s still rare to see anyone making over 1 million. Sure they get ppv cut but that’s something else.

This is a little misleading... we don't know exactly what the contracts say. A lot of times a boxer gets larger guaranteed purse in lieu of PPV points. If they get points, whether it be in boxing or MMA, we usually don't know what the scale is.

It's true, at the top end of divisions you tend to see better guaranteed money in boxing. But if you look at the overall average, there isn't much of a disparity, if at all. And middle of the pack fighters will get more in the UFC than in boxing. Very hard to figure out what an overall average might be, the numbers are too large.

Yea you are becoming a promoter to make sure these guys get paid right... yea okay bud. Wants to ride the mma wave to the $hore, don’t blame him but don’t act like this ain’t about You getting paid Oscar. You’ll find out soon enough if a promoter wants to get paid and keep the show going you can only give the fighters so much. It’s how this game goes.

So the only thing that matters are the top five of each division? That's pretty bad logic and I'm not entertaining it

Ha

"While there's a lot of money sloshing around in boxing, most of it ends up in the hands of a few star fighters. Although the likes of Floyd Mayweather may earn $500 million for a couple of fights, most pro boxers struggle to make a living from boxing. Professional sports competitors earned a median salary of $51,370 annually in 2017, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This means that half of pro athletes, including pro boxers, earned less than this amount. The lowest paid 10 percent tier earn less than $19,220 per year"

Just for media spin. If he gave a shit about fighters health, he wouldn’t be putting chuck Liddell in a fight.
