Overeem doesn't see Alex Pereira as a champion

Do you see Pereira as a real champ or not?

love alex but it's really a miracle how far he's reached with minimal grappling. it's unheard of. overeem's not wrong.

Poatan: Beats the current and former middleweight champion, and two light heavyweight champions

Overeem: I don't see him as a champion.

If Jan could have submitted or get a GNP stoppage on the mat, he would have. He had plenty of opportunity. Alex has solid counter grappling at this point, its plain to see. He's never going to be an offensive submission guy but why would he?

Overeem is always going to be a fun guy, but his career speaks for itself. He almost immediately got busted for PEDS upon joining the UFC, shrank, then resumed getting knocked out every third fight. Imagine getting knocked out by guys with the skill level of Travis and Bigfoot and having something to say about Alex.
You think Alex has solid counter grappling? Every fighter who has attempted a takedown against Alex has gotten him down, and Alex has yet to fight a strong grappler. He’s pretty bad on the ground.

Poatan's only loss was to another elite MMA striker. Overeem was KO'd by heavy-handed but less technical, plodding fighters like Bigfoot, Browne and Rothwell. Sounds like Overeem is jealous that Poatan did something he could never do. Overeem was certainly talented, but without unlimited juicing, he always had exploitable holes and would get finshed periodically when he fought hard-hitting opponents.

He's not necessarily wrong about Poatan's ground game but so far it hasn't cost him a fight.

While it's very impressive what Pereira has done in such a short period, let's not forget that he pretty much got fast tracked to the MW title shot because of his history with Izzy. And, he has also taken advantage of a historically weak LHW division. I've also gotta give him credit for staying active and fighting frequently in an era when many top guys do not. That has probably helped is quick ascension to the top as well.

Pereira is better than Overeem ever was. Reem used to mentally fold. Poatan doesn’t.

You see Poatan beating units like Lesnar or JDS?

Reem never held the belt in the ufc so in that regard, Poatan has him beat. But Reem has battled for god-damn 20 yrs with a lot of names on his body count....

Pereira has Strickland, Izzy, Jiri, Geriatric Jan and fresh off an injury Jamahal Hill....Seems a little hasty to say that warrants him being better than Reem ever was.

Reem was roided to the gills vs post diverculitis Lesnar.

And he did not beat JDS.. he beat SDS. Lets be honest.. at that point he was Senior dos Santos.

Reem had an excellent career but he was never the top dog. Pereira actually is.

There aren't really any freestyle wrestlers in LHW. Closest is probably Anklaev. Jan has some takedowns but he gassed horribly in Colorado.

I think so far almost all his opponents could have taken Alex down. They just want to play this game of testing his standup until it's too late and they been kicked a few times in the calf. Hill focused on delaying the calf kick from landing but he should have at least tried to test the TDD.

Overeem has been one of my favs for a long time, but he sounds a little salty. I get his point, but Alex is clearly a fast learner, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that his defense grappling continues to improve rapidly, even at his age; which nullifies Overeem’s point. Either way, both are amazing, however Alex accomplished something Overeem didn’t.

Reem is older than JDS......

i see him as the champion since his victories in title fights were legit against legit opponent ( seeing jiri vacated the title and never lost it in the first place) but there is no denying that he got an esay road and favorable match up to get there just because his rivality with adesanya was a selling point

Easy? Thrust into a fight with Strickland in his 3rd UFC bout. Has Ko’d 3 champions and beat a 4th who was ranked #3 in his first foray at LHW. He was fast tracked, but to say that he was given “easy” matches is utter bullshit. He was thrown into the grinder with champions and top ten opposition because he’s booping all these guys and putting them to sleep. It’s not his fault that there’s simply no dominant grapplers at MW or LHW.

Eh. His BJJ ain't that bad. He wore Jan like a backpack and Jan was never close to even threatening a submission. Granted BJJ defense is easier to learn/do than offense, it was impressive.

Nobody is perfect. Saying "once he's figured out" is like yeah okay. Knowing how to beat someone and actually doing it are two different things.

Agree. AP’s grappling is good enough to defend against pretty much anyone currently at LHW or MW. He can get taken down, as Jan and Izzy showed, but good luck catching him with a sub. Jan gassed out after one round of trying to grapple with AP. He couldn’t land any gn’p, either. AP’s defensive grappling is sound and educated.

Pereira dick riders going full retard again suggesting everybody criticizing his grappling is just jealous.

Conor McGregor's grappling is lightyears ahead of Poatan's, yet he was constantly shit on about it. The double standard here is real.

Alex has wins over 5 current or former-UFC champs and has successfully defended his title. What more does he want?
