Please Rate My Bag Work

Were the shorts necessary?
What were you trying to accomplish by being near butt ass naked on a forum with millions of veiwers?

It's been said. It needs to be said to a point that you do it.

Get a trainer, a professional to assist you with technique. The best way to start training is to start training properly. Even if you're only doing it for fitness/fun then wouldn't you rather do it properly?

A trainer will teach you technique from the start, so when you're home making home movies in your lovely shorts you'll have proper technique rather than learning bad habits and hoping some internet advice will help you.

It's harder to break the bad habits you're building than it will be to get into the correct habits!

Off to a boxing club this thursday and then home to rehearse that stuff on the bag. I think I want to get the hands from a boxing club before going down to the MT gym. Having said that, Im pretty sure Ive improved since that video. The way Im leaning forward and just throwing my fists out looks ridiculous now.

Since then, Im practicing on sort of rotating around an axis of a straight back that doesnt lean forward (unless I crouch more which allows more forward leaning) or backward when punching, and slowly and carefully placing my punches along the shortest straightest line from a to z with a relaxed upper body and then trying to speed that up with the same care and relaxed motion instead of vaguely throwing fists out in front of me. Spent several hours just rotating the hips and torso without even punching which showed me how out of balance and off centre I was, just trying to get to feel the jab from the hips and shoulders. Then added slow, careful strikes. Previously, I was swinging the shoulders wildly and uncontrolled, now Im trying to rotate the upper body controlled, quickly and tightly. I also spent a long while punching with straight open palms and fingers "pointing" straight towards the target trying to keep a straight line, as if very lightly punching someone on the chin with the fingertip of the ring finger and saw how much I was buckling the left fist.

Disclaimer : I ain't reading 5 pages of replies, so what I'm about to tell you might have been said already :)

At first glance, a few things pop out :

- You're not twisting your fists at all when you hit, so you end up hitting with your thumb pointing upwards, or when you DO twist, it's not enough and you end up hitting with your small knuckles ( 4th and 5th ). Make sure you twist all the way, with your knuckles pointing up. You should be hitting with the 2nd and 3rd knuckles.

- You're not using your hips when you hit, so it's all arm punches. Try being on the ball of your toes and twisting your hips when you throw punches. For example, if you're throwing a straight right, your right foot should be on the ball of your toes.

- Right now, you're in a pattern of throwing a jab, waiting one second, throwing a straight, waiting one second, throwing a jab, waiting one second, etc. Mix it up, use hooks and uppercuts, throw 2 to 4 strikes at a time. Jab, straight, left body hook - wait - hook, hook, left uppercut, straight right - wait - etc.

- You're only throwing head strikes. Mix it up.

Keep it up.

Thanks.

Im actually doing that on purpose to try to get away from the buckling fist and learn to punch straight ( YouTube - Boxing Jab - Basics ). Damn, I thought I was getting the hips into it though.

For example, if you're throwing a straight right, your right foot should be on the ball of your toes.
It is, like a mofo. Somethings still wrong, I guess. I have no probs mixing stuff up and usually do, but it seems a waste of time mixing shit up if the basic movements are bad...

One of the reasons you also twist while punching is to get the leather on skin tear, but more importantly to keep you from breaking your smaller knuckles, and using your harder knuckles to transfer more power.

As others said ( I didn't read all of them ), you need to punch more with your hips..

and .. lastly .. don't post with tighty whiteys on.. since I won't be able to watch from work.. without someone thinking i'm watching some nasty man on man sweat fetish porno

Also.. speed.. more speed.. speed is power

A little improvement at least? Please? Pretty please? Im fully clothed too. All Im trying to do here is swing the right shoulder and arm like a piece of string, powered by the twist of the right half of the body, so you're welcome to ignore the swinging guard and that Im not pronating the wrist etc.

Dude, there's not gonna be major improvements in 1 week, ESPECIALLY without proper instruction. Also, throwing a right "hook" to the body over and over does not really qualify as bag work.

I'm going to reiterate what others have said : stop posting your videos here and join a gym. You need someone there with you to correct your mistakes before they become a habit. Proper technique can't be learned on the internet.

I saw nothing wrong with your technique. You improved greatly with the new videos. I suggest taking an amateur fight immediately and show off your superior skillset. The sky is the limit for someone of your incredible potential.

yeah, not trying to be flash, just wondering whether my hip movement was connecting with an upper body motion. According to my instructor yesterday it is. Thanks anyway though, tough guy.

lmao, ftw!!!

Have to admit, there exists no good comeback to that vid lol

Edit: Well, except keep practicing and not recording in undies heh

I'm not a trainer, but I think you should get to a gym and ask the trainer to teach you a little bit about distance and movement. You're really "off" and you don't use your body in your punches. You're basically flailing at the bag from the wrong distance.

Yeah, Im at a gym now. Thanks. I can see how wrong that is now, but theory is one thing and practice is another ;) Anyway, about every 4th punch today he was saying "thats it", so Im slowly getting there. I can get a bit of body into uppercuts now, but I fall back into using the shoulders when punching straight, though at least my hips arent actually pointing the opposite way anymore ;)
