The whole "without a ref" thing has to be the dumbest argument people ever make about MMA. People fight the way they do BECAUSE there's a ref there. That goes for both fighters.

Cause news flash, but in a fight to the death they're not going to focus on fighting your grip like they have to with a ref present. They'd gauge you in the eye or hit you in the nuts (I'm assuming you removed your cup for this super manly fight to the death?). The reason you can do the choke you can is precisely because the rules forbid all the more effective ways to fight in a real fight. Doesn't mean you couldn't still pull it off, but it's a lot harder to do than when your opponent's only defences are fighting your grip off, escaping, or toughing it out.

Nobody ever wants to acknowledge this and instead they pretend it's some kinda vacuum scenario where only one of them gets to fight unbarred and the other can't.
