One of the best and most prolific character actors of all time was 88.

Midnight Cowboy, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Serpico, Slap Shot, Ordinary People, Missing in Action, Fletch, Back to School, Raising Arizona

M. Emmet Walsh's 70's and 80's tv career is also impressive. He was a real one.

Etched from the granite mountain block of humanity for film noir and detective drama.

For some reason I walkways confuse him with Scott Wilson. I’m not sure why.

Legendary character actor right there. RIP.

I always found it funny that he was Tim Hutton’s swim coach in the very good drama Ordinary People and then was the collegiate swim coach a few years later in the epic Dangerfield comedy Back to School.

His career ran the gamut. He could play as menacing as he did in Blood Simple or as amiable as he was in Back to School.

The whole triple Lindy setup and payoff was hysterical.

RIP

Michael Emmet Walsh (March 22, 1935 – March 19, 2024) was an American character actor who appeared in over 200 films and television series, including small but important supporting roles such as Earl Frank in Straight Time (1978), the Madman in The Jerk (1979), Captain Bryant in Blade Runner (1982), Harv in Critters (1986), and Walt Scheel in Christmas with the Kranks (2004). He starred as private detective Loren Visser in Blood Simple (1984), the Coen Brothers' first film for which he won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.

His other numerous film appearances include Midnight Cowboy (1969), Little Big Man (1970), What's Up, Doc? (1972), Serpico (1973), The Gambler (1974), Bound for Glory (1976), Slap Shot (1977), Airport '77 (1977), Ordinary People (1980), Reds (1981), Silkwood (1983), Fletch (1985), Back to School (1986), Raising Arizona (1987), Romeo + Juliet (1996), My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), The Iron Giant (1999), Calvary (2014), and Knives Out (2019).

Never a bad performance.

Never.

One of those guys that every time he showed up in a movie it was automatically better now, regardless of the final quality.
this! him & Michael Lerner were my two favorite characters actors who never once didn’t elevate whatever they were in, & now they’ve both been taken from us ;_;

He only had 2 scenes in Blade Runner but was so memorable in both. RIP
