Reaching out to sherbros for some advice. I got my annual blood work done and my doctor recommended I take statins like Crestor tablets every day 10 mg dose. The level is 282.29 mg/dl ("Bad" above 200 mg/dl apparently). 50 year old male, great shape (work out everyday, eat very healthy).

Should I take it? I am worried about side effects like muscle pain and memory loss. I will of course take advice with a grain of salt.

More plates more dates has info on an alternative to statins. I forget what’s it’s called but it’s worth looking into. Less side effects

One video he mentions it in is “my trt protocol” or something like that

Some say APOB test is a better predictor for cardio vascular disease. Some doctors really subscribe to the lipid theory and just want to nuke your cholesterol and treat that high number, where others will want a more complete picture of other risk factors like inflammatory markers, metabolic health, triglycerides, and CAC score.

There's a lot of nuance here and many things to consider. If you feel like you need a 2nd or 3rd opinion from other physicians(try a specialist next time) then you should probably go on and book those appointments. I don't always trust the first recommendation made by my GP if I have a gut feeling that something else could be done that doesn't involve lifelong/life altering medication.

Great recommendations. Thanks guys.

If you are unsure just consult with a different doctor/cardiologist to get a second opinion (not youtube or Sherdog). Also monitor yourself and get tested often, especially if there's any cardiac episodes in family history. As far as I know statins are effective and genetics play a role regardless of your diet, but yeah, talk to an actual doctor.

Yes, my dad had quadripple bypass surgery at 68 years old.

Your LDL is pretty high. Anything above 190 is very high. Is your HDL below 40?

Post your lab results? Just block out your name and other identifiers.

I decided to take them, but only 3x a week. Or once a week. Scientific literature is showing they are still as effective without the side effect taking with less frequency.

Mine was high once. I switched to a low fat diet. That really helped me.

I personally don't believe the cholesterol theory is a good predictor of heart disease. There are better theories. One theory we hear about everyday is blood clots. Due to COVID, many are reporting that blood clots are causing fatal heart attacks. There are helpful easy ways to lower the chances of a blood clot from forming causing a cardiac event.

On the statin drug you might ask your doctor how much longer you can expect to live by taking the statin. I can remember seeing a study that found the regular taking of a statin drug will extend life by about one day a year. In light of the side effects it didn't seem worth it to me.

What are the side effects of statins that are so bad?

Last time I got bloodwork done (4 years ago) I was just over the "normal" range. I'm finally going back next month to have it done again. My lifestyle during the pandemic was considerably less healthy than before, so I'm expecting that number to be worse this time.

"Should I take statins?"

That's a question for you and your doctor (hopefully doctors).

Side effects are mild muscle pain for a small percent of people. They usually go away over time. So far I am fine. Randy couture got a heart attack at 56 because of naturally high cholesterol. That's what I have. Heart attacks are totally preventable. Statins can lower bad cholesterol at about 20%. If you don't have naturally bad cholesterol produced in the liver just eat clean.

This is because the risk of heart disease is exposure to cholesterol levels beyond a certain threshold for a certain duration of time. So what typically happens is someone will be exposed for to this level of cholesterol for 20+ years and then when they feel symptoms go to the doctor, at which point atherosclerosis has progressed for the last 20+ years. So taking medication 20+ years after you were supposed to take it, will naturally not extend your life by much.

Second it doesn't matter what you believe or don't believe. There have been studies done on people born with naturally high cholesterol levels and those born with naturally low cholesterol levels, and predictably the ones with naturally high cholesterol levels have higher rates of heart disease.

Damn that's pretty fucking high. I would say do everything you can to lower it, even if it means getting yourself into one of those intervention trials.
