Star Wars no longer has the magic

Disney sucked it out like a vampire would

Greed won

I trust @Dragonlordxxxxx 99% of the time.

The 1% being I think he said Jessica Jones as “alright” when it was potentially the worst thing ever made.

Things I'm mad about with this movie just off the top of my head. I thought it was a well made movie, but the story is so f**king abysmal it ruined it for me.
Warning, massive rant incoming..

Poe blowing up all the turrets on the dreadnaught by himself. Why didn't the first order release Tie Fighters instantly to have them at the ready when they saw him. Stupid and unrealistic writing for supposedly the most mighty navy in the galaxy.

Leia being blown into space, being able to survive and use force powers to fly back into the ship. Since when has Leia had the ability to do something like this? She's never shown notable force powers before and you're just going to give it to her because she's Leia? Where's the back story!!

Rey meeting Luke, and Luke all of a sudden becoming some socially awkward hermit. He's not like the old Luke at all. I honestly couldn't see the old Luke in him. You're telling me a wise Jedi Master has changed so much? No.
Not only that, but getting bested by Rey in their little dual? Jesus christ. This guy is meant to be as powerful as Anakin, the chosen one. Yet he gets out fought by a nobody. Fuck you disney.
"“I’ll never turn to the dark side. You’ve failed, your highness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me.”
The young jedi who defeated Darth Vader in combat and he gets beaten by a fucking scavenger.. eurgh.

"Supreme Leader Snoke is more powerful than Darth Vader and emperor palpatine" - Andy Serkis
All this build up and all this talk of Snoke, to only have him die so pathetically?
He's reading Kylo's mind but can't sense Kylo spinning the lightsaber around? He can't hear the saber rattle? Don't give me some bullshit about him being caught up in the power of the dark side and trusting Kylo too much. I realize that is why Vader snuck up on Sidious and that's why he could pick him up, but Snoke was billed to be more powerful and wise then Sidious.
10 minutes earlier he said he was disappointed in Kylo, now his faith is completely restored in Kylo? Bad writing, fuck you disney.

The praetorian guards. These are meant to be the most bad ass warriors in the galaxy, personal protectors to Snoke. Yet he has them standing so far back from his throne that were anything to happen they wouldn't be able to protect him in time. Also, they get taken care of within 5 minutes by two force users. What was the point of them? They honestly served no purpose other then a sub par fight scene with poor choreography. I was watching Kylo during this fight and his movements were slow, uncoordinated and lack luster. Big, arching strikes that should leave him wide open.. eurgh.

Captain Phasma, so much potential, so much waste of a character. Gets bested once again by a fucking sanitation trooper.

Luke force projecting his image across the galaxy to fight Kylo. Terrible fucking fight. I'm not impressed by Luke pulling off the Matrix fall back move. How many times did he do that move, three times in the movie? Is that honestly the best they could come up with?

Luke dying after force projecting. WHAT!? Is that honestly the best way you could come up with him to die? What an anti-climatic fucking death. You couldn't have him actually go there in person and make his sacrifice worthy? If he went there in person and was bested by Kylo, then that builds up Kylo as the big bad.

Following on from the previous point, Kylo is a fucking weakling with daddy issues. He got bested by Rey TWICE, he's emotional, unstable, in a constant power struggle with General Hux for command, who by the way seems like a far more intimidating leader. And he is meant to be the big bad we worry about in the next movie?
Nope, not buying it. Rey has already beaten him twice, now she will beat him again, because DISNEY yay everybody has a happy ending.

@Dragonlordxxxxx, serious question, how do you feel it stacks up to the prequels?
I still have to think about that one.

After watching The Force Awakens, it made me appreciate a bit more the prequels' originality in their stories. After watching The Last Jedi, it made me appreciate a bit more the prequels' build-up and major action sequences.

@TheRuthlessOne and I were just discussing the prequels in a PM. He seems to feel like they are highly underrated.

I also heard you need to give it a tad to marinate and it should get better the more times you see it, I only heard the enjoyment is always better after the first screening once you vibe with it better.
It's possible that a second viewing might improve my enjoyment of it since I now know what the scope and limitations of the story is for TLJ. But I have no plans on seeing TLJ again in theaters, unless the kids want to.

@Dragonlordxxxxx maybe see it 1 more time in the weekend just to test this theory have you ever had it ? watching a movie for the second time to improve on your evaluation drastically, well noticeably better said.
Oh yeah, I've had numerous occasions where I've enjoyed a movie more upon seeing it a second or third time at home.

Haha well maybe ask the kids in the weekend if they wanna have another go at it. :D

Would be funny if you come back with an extra point on that rating.

Unlike @Dragonlordxxxxx you actually liked Blade Runner 2049, so I’m more interested on your take on it.
<{anton}>
Ouch. You are wrong about Blade Runner 2049, I liked it.

Btw, Shadow also gave BR 2049 a 7.5 initially and bumped it higher upon second viewing. I've only seen it once and gave a preliminary rating of 7.5 but as I said in that review, it could go higher with future viewing.

Also, I know Shadow. He'll probably rate The Last Jedi a 7 or 7.5.

How did you feel about them

Pretty much destroying everything good about the Jedi? Pretty much turning them into pieces of shit
I wouldn't go as far to say the new trilogy are "pieces of shit." I found TFA pretty good and TLJ decent. But in terms of what these movies could have potentially become, it is disappointing.

Dragonlord’s Review of STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI
(Minor Spoilers)

Bottom Line: Severely underwhelming. All I kept on thinking throughout was, “Really, this is the best story you could come up with?”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens rehashed lots of elements as well as the narrative structure from A New Hope. Fans were hoping that Star Wars: The Last Jedi would break free from this cycle and give them something bold and original for the sequel. The Last Jedi opens with the First Order arriving at the Resistance base with the rebels in the middle of evacuating just like in Empire Strikes Back. D’oh! It’s not exactly the same but it’s similar in nature. The space action sequence was well done and highlights Poe Dameron’s (Oscar Isaac) heroics.

The highly-anticipated meeting between Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) was a dud. Whatever thoughts of epic or special moments you were anticipating, discard them now. Junk those “Eye of the Tiger” music that’s playing in your head. Nothing really extraordinary happens during her training and the interaction between the two characters doesn’t live up to expectations. The only notable lesson Luke teaches Rey is a Force meditation but she comes out more powerful than before.

The First Order fleet catches up to the few remaining rebel spaceships thanks to their new lightspeed tracking device and a slow, unexciting pursuit begins as the Resistance ships, with only 6 hours worth of fuel, have to keep on running with the First Order right behind their tail. It is more boring and uneventful than it actually sounds. It also kills the tension when small rebel ships are shown coming and going any time they want.

Finn (John Boyega) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tan), a Resistance maintenance worker, break off from the pack in their spaceship to go to a casino in Canto Bight to look for a master codebreaker. The whole side adventure with Finn and Rose is just a waste of screen time because not only are the events that happened on their mission uninspiring, these two characters are not interesting enough to care. Along the way, they meet a shady character named DJ (Benicio Del Toro) who agrees to help them out with their First Order problem. This is another Empire Strikes Back throwback with Canto Bight as Cloud City and DJ as Lando Calrissian.

Half of the cast is terrific, it’s just the script that doesn’t give their characters justice properly. Daisy Ridley still brought the same charisma and beauty from TFA that makes Rey such a compelling character. But if you didn’t like Rey in TFA for whatever reasons you had, you probably won’t like her here either. Mark Hamill as the older Luke Skywalker was good but wished he was written better. Carrie Fisher was outstanding as General Leia as she exhibits strong leadership, warmth, humor and a really cool and very memorable character moment.

Aside from his solid action scenes at the beginning, they really didn’t know what to do with Poe Dameron as he is just going through the motions. They even give him some mutiny subplot that amounted to nothing except to kill time. Finn was a more likable here than in TFA. Rose felt tacked on and this is completely shallow on my part but I wished they switched places with her sister, Paige (Vietnamese stunner Veronica Ngo), who was easy on the eyes.

Whatever respectability General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) garnered with The Force Awakens is totally gone now as he is made into a laughing stock and the butt of most of the jokes. Supreme Leader Snoke is a bust. All the build-up amounted to nothing (see spoiler box). Snoke’s CGI was unnecessary as his appearance can be easily copied with make-up and prosthetics. Captain Phasma, who looked really cool but was utterly useless in The Force Awakens, had more to do in here but still falls behind the Porgs as memorable characters go.

Just as you thought the movie is going to end, surprise, there’s still 30 minutes left. Although it amounted to nothing, the visual imagery of the Rebel speeders rushing towards the walkers leaving behind a trail of red dust is just stunning. To the surprise of no one, the special effects are amazing and the sets are remarkable. Traditionalists will be happy to know that they maintained the retro tech look to make it compatible with the original trilogy. Aside from Empire Strikes Back, there are reused moments taken from Return of the Jedi as well.

The first 80-90 minutes is pretty dull. Throughout I kept on thinking, “Really, this is the best story you could come up with?” For a Star Wars movie, the story felt a bit generic and the direction they took it in was disappointing. After watching The Last Jedi, you will be more appreciative for The Force Awakens. Whatever flaws The Force Awakens had, at least it was fast-paced, engaging and exciting for the most part.

Objectively speaking, The Last Jedi could be a 7 or 7.5 star rating, more if from a casual moviegoer perspective. But in relation to this being a Star Wars movie and it's supposed to be epic and this is what they came up with, hence the rating below.

Rating: 6.5/10

(Under construction. Check back in a few hours)

So at least a 7.5 for me then alrighty

I'm starting to regret voting for you in the Best Sherdog Mod Poll...

Heh, this reminds me of the time when I gave The Force Awakens a 7/10 review. Lots of fans gave me grief about why the score was low during the opening weekend.

Say what? Shadow gave BR a 7.5?? But he said in a thread just yesterday that it was his number 1 film for 2017???

I’m giving 7 confused Vincent Vegas out of 10

I said initially. He gave it a 7.5/10 initially. He bumped his rating and it became his favorite movie after rewatching it.

Can anyone give a general plotline to this story? The trailers havent really said anything and even after reading the main review, I cant seem to figure out what this movies about. Use spoilers if needed.

I hated the porgs. It was a blatant attempt to sell merchandise and I hated how they stole screen time for no reason than to look "cute and funny."

I agree with switching the asian chicks. Don't get why they kill off the hot one then give the chubby one more screen time. It's not like she was a phenomenal actress.

LOL

I went and saw the movie once and gave it a 7.5. I found the pacing to be a bit too slow and also thought the narrative was a bit difficult to fully grasp.

I then came home, read stuff, talked through the movie with some people, and thought about what I watched. After all that, I went and saw the movie a second time.

After the second viewing, I gave it a 9. Then I talked through the movie some more . . . thought about it some more . . . and finally landed on a rating of 8.5.

I think that it's an imperfect, but still great, film. I feel like the script could've used just a bit more work, but all in all the story is interesting, the visuals and performances are great, and the themes it explores are worthy of consideration.

That's enough to get it to my #1 spot of the year. It's been a while since I've rated something as highly as an 8.5.
