The Dungeons and Dragons Megathread v2

That's really cool. The GM (I guess DM as a term isn't used any longer?) is the most crucial aspect, so It's neat to see people monetizing that. I had no idea the work that goes into a good module, until I went over early one time and my buddy was in the middle of setting things up. We used to cover the pizza and snacks for our DM's.

How long do these generally go for? Are you given a character to use at the beginning?

I started playing D&D in the 80s so I still say DM. :D

It seems most DM's sessions on Start Playing are about 4 hours long. We modified ours to 2 hours long because 4 hours is too long for our son. Our DM has made his own world which is really cool. It's quite impressive how he narrates everything without having to look something up or read from a page. We all made our own characters. I'm sure he can make them for his players if they want.

Party came across a family being robbed and beaten...

Trog the Barbarian Greater Rages (+6 to Str and Con) for the first time since reaching LvL 11 when seeing innocent folk harmed...

Splattered two goons...

Arebus the Necro got attacked by one goon who rolled at Nat 1 jumping from the rooftop to hit him to fall on his face...then calmly stepped back and cast his newly acquired Disentigrate...goon's save failed and took 85dmg before being dusted...

Our Monk and Trog fucked up another two goons

Final goon decided to put a knife to one of the family members throat then got two arrows to skull from our Ranger with some ballsy attack rolls...

Sure it was filler vs randoms...felt good to flex though

The general consensus seems to be that the best feats are:
Lucky
Sentinel
Polearm Master
Great Weapon Master / Sharpshooter
Crossbow Expert
Honorable Mentions: Resilient and Bountiful Luck

What are your personal favorites, whether from these or all the rest?

Well. The party already has a fighter, a ranger, a paladin, a rogue, and a druid. So guess who gets to be the wizard? *sigh* I really wanted to play a human glaive fighter. We’re starting at 5th level so I would have had Polearm Master and Sentinel, then Great Weapon Master when leveling up to 6th *sigh* maybe next time…

wrong game but worth the funny.

Bummer dude....

....misjudge the area of effect on fireball and cause a tragic accident to the fighter then get yourself killed...

...or just make sure you die the same session he does...

Back when I was in 8th grade we played every Friday after school. My friends mom was always the Dungeon Master. We always had 6-10 players. It was me & my 2 friends (13) and the rest were adults. We would start around 5pm and play sometimes until morning. Sometimes the whole next day. It was amazing having that many people that were hardcore into it. I didn't realize how lucky I was until I got older. Having that many people who played consistently is pretty rare.

I'm a big fan of mobile for melee combatants, particularly monks, fighters or hunter rangers using horde breaker (aka classes with lots of attacks).
Fey touched is also nifty for spellcasters if you need to balance out an odd number casting stat and your DM doesn't restrict official sources; a free misty step and then pick gift of alacrity which lasts eight hours (aka basically all day unless your DM is very particular) and gives a d8 bonus to initiative

We've played twice since my last update. Recap below followed by new post:

Another nice, relaxing session. We picked up our son's platemail. Very cool. DM said he basically has a commanding presence about him now with this armor (photo attached). He also went to a store and had a Roc talon necklace made with a gold metal eagle head. I picked up a silver cross and prayer book to Lathander since I need to restore my soul.

We left Neverwinter without incident and camped in our Tiny Hut outside of Phandalin. A random gnoll came by so I removed my mask and stuck my wight face outside the hut. "Run away or I'll consume you!" I rolled a 3. I used my inspiration coin and re-rolled to a total of 13 for intimidation. The gnoll rolled a 12 and ran away. It was pretty funny.

We arrived in Phandalin and that's where our session ended. Excited to visit old friends in town and see what our pet goblin has been up to.

We walked back into Phandalin. Very cool feeling to return to the famous town of LMOP after what has felt like a long time. We went straight to Tresendar Manor where we had left our pet goblin, Pix. He was doing just fine. Apparently he would steal things from the town and Sildar Hallwinter would replace them for the townsfolk. We took Pix deer hunting, taught him how to track, played a "guess which hand game" with a gold tooth we still had from Yeemik (LMOP), sprinkled pixie dust on him so he could feel what it is like to fly, and left him with a potion of invisibility in case he got in trouble.

We met up with my brother-in-arms, Sildar. Turns out the paper bird message we had sent to his long lost love, Thyla Starr, had been answered. She was headed to Phandalin but never showed up. We told Sildar we would investigate and to direct our proceeds from the mine to improving Pix's home. We immediately left town and headed back out onto the Triboar Trail to look for carriage tracks which our NPC ranger found. We tracked them back to a snake wizard, Sahir, at Old Owl Well.

After some conversation, we see that Thyla is being held in his tent by a zombie with a sword at her throat waiting for the kill word. Sahir wants us to go kill a two headed giant and retrieve a staff. We agree but have another plan in mind. We labor to the giant and try to convince him that Sahir wants him dead but we'll help him kill Sahir. He's not going for it. After a bunch of persuasion rolls, the two giant heads begin fighting with each other and bashing each other in the face. Pretty hilarious for our son.

One of his orc followers comes up and asks if Sahir is the one that has been sending zombies to attack them. We parlay and the orc agrees to rescue Thyla with his other sneaky orcs. We set up camp outside their cave and that's where the session ends.

Until next week. My fighter hates magic users so we'll see if we return to Sahir's camp anyways. Besides, I hear he has a +1 Ring of Protection in his treasure chest. :D

Man, last week's session was good. The orcs come back and tell us they saved Thyla Starr, but Sahir the magic user escaped. The orcs take us back to their camp where Thyla has been kept safe and introduce us to the chieftan, Teef Splitta. A 15' foot orc chief who the DM tells us is a legendary character in his world. We can tell this is an amicable meeting. He gives us Thyla and says he has some magic items from Sahir's camp he's willing to trade. It's a pair of sending stones, scroll case, and the Ring of Protection +1 (identified by our bard). I'm super excited about the ring. We trade the Dragonguard breastplate we acquired from Wave Echo Cave for all of it. Our son has a 21 AC so he decides to give it to his mom (our bard) because her AC is only 13. Proud of him.

At this point, we think we'll just continue on to Triboar to follow the main quest line. Teef Splitta goes on to tell us some history and so forth, but eventually inserts a tiny word that I cue in on. Dragon. My wife and son didn't hear it. I think I regret doing this now, but I say, "Wait, did you say there's a dragon?" We're in Wyvern Tor right next to Icespire Peak. He goes on to tell us about Cryovain the white dragon. Our son is now nearly jumping out of his seat at the prospect of fighting a dragon. I facepalm because I don't want to fight a dragon and risk the death of his character, or mine for that matter.

Since I made a bad deal some games ago and was changed into a wight in exchange for protection against death for my wife, I am trying to restore my soul by dedicating to Lathander. My plan is to take a level in War Cleric at level 6. We're debating about the whole dragon situation. I pray to Lathander for a sign. Nothing. Our fighter son somehow brokers a deal with Teef Splitter to come with us to fight Cryovain. The DM tells us Teef Splitter is so powerful he could probably kill Cryovain by himself. That makes me feel better. The deal is over Cryovain's horde. We can choose to keep the dragon's treasure horde or the legendary weapon from it, a battleaxe named Oath Keeper.

But now this presents a moral dilemma for my character. He doesn't want his wife to go fight a dragon because she almost just died from the magic-user battle a few games ago. In-game, there is no way he would want her to go. In-game, I tell them I'm torn between my wife and my best friend (son fighter). We take a break from the session here and debate as a group. Fighter son wants to go fight Cryovain. Wife says she's not. I'm undecided. We go back into the game after break and have the standard D&D long debate.

Our fighter son asks our NPC paladin if he wants to go. He does and will even go without us because of his paladin creed. He asks our NPC ranger if she wants to go. She does not. My wife jumps in and says they will go back to Phandalin (probably for the wine). Teef Splitta agrees to have them escorted back. I reluctantly agree to go with our fighter. I then go on to give a soliloquy to my wife before we split up. We give each other the sending stones. I give her a prized possession. I reach down to take my ring off and give to her in case I don't return and realize I don't have a ring. She gives me her Ring of Protection which was an awesome storyline move.

And that ends the session. The DM tells us he was totally not expecting this to happen and is happy to use the week to prepare the battle with Cryovain. So now it will be Teef Splitta (legendary 15' orc), five of his orcs and one apparently has the ability to keep the dragon from flying, fighter son level 5, my level 5 fighter, and our NPC paladin.

Not sure the DM is going to make it so easy that we just waltz in and kill Cryovain in a few hits. This is what makes D&D so awesome. Never know what's going to happen. :D
