A lot of people have complained about the HW division being shallow over the years, but now it really is in awful shape. Derrick Lewis ranked #2 and turned in a performance in his last fight that would likely have made Dana White fire him if they weren't so desperate for Heavyweight fighters. People like to talk about how MMA fighters have advanced in technique so much sine The UFC began, but honestly, if Derrick Lewis had to fight a man exactly the same as Tank Abbott was in his prime, Lewis would lose. I'm not even sure if Tank has a winning record in The UFC but when he was in shape and having a good night, he was a threat to any man on the planet wanting to fight.

For the most part but it had two golden eras.

Mid-2000s PRIDE HW division with Fedor, Nog, Cro Cop, Barnett, Kharitonov in their primes. Arlovski, Sylvia, and Couture in the UFC.

Late-2000s UFC HW division with Brock, Cain, Carwin, JDS in their primes. Fedor, Ubereem, Werdum, Barnett, TRT Bigfoot in Strikeforce.

People seem to forget when all HW had was arlovski and Sylvia while Mir was on the shelf. All the best heavyweights were in pride

Allow guys to roid like 2005 and all the sudden the UFC top HW rankings are:

1) Jon Jones 6'5 280 lbs ripped
2) Cain uninjured 250 lbs
3) Stipe 260 lbs ripped
4) Ubereem
5) Gus @ 250 lbs
6) DC ripped
7) Romero @ 240 lbs or 230 shredded
8) Minakov?

There's better talent than ever. There's just stricter drug testing and that kills HW more than any other division. No drug testing allows HWs to be SHWs, LHWs to be huge HWs, and MWs to be HWs. LHW is traditionally hte most stacked divisoin and MW was recently the most stacked division. Now imagine all that talent at HW!

That said, I'd pick Cain and Stipe to be favorites over any pre-2018 HW except for Ubereem. DC, Stipe, Minakov, etc are as good or better than any crop of HWs in history. There's just not much depth to the division because traditionally that depth was provided by ballooned up LHWs like a ripped 230 lbs monster Wanderlei. A guy who, in the US, without even USADA testing, was a small, fat MW.

True but this is a different time. There was a time when it was just Cain and JDS with Strikeforce having more top guys yet UFC fanboys and some MMA fans, in general, swore Cain was the best ever and the UFC HW division of that time was the new breed.

Still, either that period or when HW was great in Pride taking the entire picture of the division it wasn't that bad.

There is no pride or SF. Even adding in Bellator HW's the HW picture is really sad and pathetic.

The funniest thing. 11 years after the first AA-Sylvia fight Stipe beat AA and got a title shot off that fight and then became the newest UFC HW GOAT. LOL 12 years after AA-Tim 1 sloppy no skilled street brawler beat AA and then got a number one contender fight and was dubbed the future GOAT baddest man ever by stupid UFC fans. LMAO a guy who was getting murked by Shogun when Fedor was ruling a HW division a million times better than any UFC HW division ever beat AA in 2016 and got a title shot and nearly KO'd the alleged new UFC HW goat in a matter of seconds.

They can have all WMMA + Midget divisions for the price of 5 HW's , want something to go away stop investing in it . But given all the recent PPV numbers & ratings people are finally waking up after 10 years of of Midgets & WMMA & saying what the fuck is going on?
