The defence isn't too old or too slow, the problem was the black hole they called midfield (defensively and offensively). Kroos and Khedira together doesn't work and in addition to that they both had a terrible tournament, as well as Özil who doesn't fit in the team at all. Strikers aren't very good either.Does remind me of Scholes post Euro 2004 a bit even if the criticism is a little more justified here.
For me though the real problem was simple, the German's defence aging and full of holes. That might be ok in qualifying but your not going to win a WC like that, even if they'd gotten though I think someone would have found them out.
It's not like the problems couldn't be adressed, but then you have an extremely shitty coach who simply won't go away. Löw is the luckiest guy on earth, he didn't even have success coaching no name bum clubs and then got carried by the best german generation in decades.
