This is a great breakdown of how one startup "Hermeus" is making great strides in building a Mach 5 plus hypersonic engine and plane. This is just one of 70 startups and major manufacturers such as Lockheed and GE in developing RAM jet or SCRAM jet planes. It's kind of wild that there are 70 different companies working on various types hypersonic planes. GE has shown their development of a hybrid duel mode SCRAM with rotating combustion to hit Mach 10+. A few companies are working on the material sciences to make planes able to handle the speeds and the temperature variations in the combustion chamber of a jet engine.

It's very likely explains how the defense budget in the US has grown to 900 billion some of that money going to these efforts.

Absolutely amazing engineering and material science stuff. We are crafty motherfuckers.

I dont think there can be any 'dominating' of this area. China and Russia are up there also, and no one has any defence to hypersonic missiles.

We are still waiting for dominant Russian fighter jets. Their hypersonic missiles are nothing more then rockets without advanced avoidance ability. Let's stop inhaling Russian an Chinese propaganda. Russia is going to be further behind after the next generation hardware.

China had to resort to using Russian engines on their j-20 fighter. That might have changed in the last year but they weren't even able to make a jet engine that would perform reliably

What are the practical applications for this tech?
Hypersonic drones that can fire regular subsonic to supersonic missiles closer to target while avoiding front line defenses. Think of it this way not needing to spend 100 million each time to hit a target. Currently Russian hypersonic missiles cost from 50 to upwards of hundred million each. Fly at higher altitudes making them much harder to hit.

Great. Let’s hope we never have to use any of it militarily, and the tech can be used to enhance civilian life eventually.
lol. come on.
you'll be bombing brown people again soon with them.

The primary use is MAD as we have to keep up or better yet stay ahead.

However like most things military it will transfer down to civilian use and affect us for better or maybe dependent how you look at it worse.

Look at all the civilian advancement that has started from military and space programs.

Their commercial airliner the C919 , made by State owned COMAC, uses American avionics and an engine designed and built by CFM Internation. CFM is a Franco-American joint venture between G.E. and French aircraft engine maker Safran.

All this talk of how China is either on par with the US or close is a lot of propaghanda or people falling for it.

Hypersonic missiles need NO explosives, their kinetic energy seems unstoppable.

I have a friend who is convinced China has Star wars s*** that will totally blow away anything of us could possibly make
