We all thought that’s what happen at the time. I remember they closed down all the Pride offices after buying them out

Nothing unusual about that

Well yeah, that's like the entire point of an acquisition.

The only thing that's really weird here is the hipster "fans" who reach for any excuse to attack the UFC while giving Pride a pass for everything. If it was the UFC that had fixed fights, telling guys to take steroids, champs having non title fights, refs with an earpiece giving out instant 10% purse deductions and grappling exchanges constantly getting hung up in the ropes and having to stop the action and move the fighters, we'd never hear the end of it.

But Dana said they couldn't make Pride events anymore because nobody in Japan wanted to make business with Zuffa...

and some people believed that

Everyone likes to think of these guys being greater than or smarter than. They're not. They just happen to have resources and important positions for whatever reason or another. Luck, nepotism, inheritance, you name it. A lot of people high up in big business are absolute morons. Pretty much anyone could do what these clowns have done.

Joe Silva: ”Big Nog straight refused to fight Cormier. I’d love to cut him”

<6>

Really comes off as an asshole.
Between his matchmaking 'ability' and his temperament, it would be impossible to distinguish Joe Silva from a random sherdogger

I think that we pretty obvious from the start. They acted like they were going to run the companies separately and "tried really hard" to get a new TV deal in Japan lol

yeah they wanted to acquire pride so someone else can’t, so? They bought out a competitor to reduce competition… so?
It’s okay unless you are in litigation due to issues relating to being a monopoly… and to kill off competition and keeping others from growing or purchasing is damning evidence against UFC in this case. If they had worded it that they were growing their own business it woukdn’t appear as bad, but their own comments make it look like they are operating in a way to prevent others from being successful which leaves them as the one and only national kevel mma organization… not a good look in a court case like this.

, champs having non title fights,
Champs having non tittle fights was very commendable.

In a time with such titlefights as Tito vs Kondo, Tito vs Elvis, Tito vs Vladdy ,Tito vs fucking kneeless-gramps Kenny (That had never fough as LHW), Menne vs WW Castillo, Andrei vs Eilers, Andrei vs Buentello, Chuck vs Horn, Tim vs Monson and all the title shots with "contenders" comming of losses (Busta, Randy like four times...). The integrity of saying "look, unless involves a bona fide top conteder is not a title fight" was absolutely awesome. And honestly surprising.
refs with an earpiece
You have a 2008 buddy...you know fucking better

Yeah, a real breath of fresh air to send bums and amateurs out to collect brain damage from the champs with nothing to gain, and nothing says "we care about our fighters" like sending 170 lb Sakuraba out to get KO'd 3 times in like a year and a half by the same roided up champ with a 50 lb weight advantage, and also getting KO'd by Cro Cop and getting KO'd another time in that same period.

I'll go even one step further and say that Mauro Ranallo is a dog shit PBP commentator and if roles were reversed and it was Goldie in Pride and Ranallo in UFC people would've been on Goldie's nuts and calling Ranallo a dummy

And this is coming from a huge Pride fan who was upset when Zuffa purchased Pride because I didn't want that organization to end

Calm down, Wandy was 200 lbs soaking wet in his early run, but yeah, always thought Takada hated Saku's guts...

Many of the crazy shit PRIDE pulled on their early days looks even worse in hindshight. But back in the day all the Japanese public was shocked when Saku lost to Wandy (They hadn't brought any belt back then) and though it was a fluke, hence the second fight. They've seen Saku pull it off against Vitor, Conan, Guy and Tiger, Rampage .. Then Tamura, the guy that allegedly had beaten Saku in shot catch matches behind cameras would avenge Japan...

As everybody believed that Fujita would send Mirko, a mere kickboxer, back to K1 signalling the superiority of Kakutogi, as Randy did to Toney... and if he'd faliled the fist time, he'd do it the second... (Most people here believed that the inexperienced Kharitonov was a sacrificial lamb in the hands of Ninja, so don't not roll your eyes...)

But we're not talking about that. The non-title fights (Once they have established the belts), and in order to be fair, not counting tournaments, were you can fight really hard non-title fights. And excluding co-promotions (Shockwave 2002)

Wandy's non title bouts:
- Minowaman: Iffy, but fared better than Tanner...
- Kondo: Yuki got a titleshot in the same division in the UFC, not in PRIDE
- Hunt: On a three days notice. No picnic.

Fedor's non title bouts:
-Goodridge: On a 5 bouts winning strike, and only losing against Minotauro in his last nine. Waay better than Eilers or Buentello, but still no belt in the line.
-Fujita: Put the newly crowned and still not that highly regarded champ on wobbly kness... Would be a TS in the Eilers-Buentello era in the UFC.
-TK: Same story that Horn, but still no belt in the line.
-Zuluzinho: Ok, that was fucked up.
-Coleman: No one wanted to fight Fedor in the dying promotion. Barnett said loudly "I only accept gimme fights" (And got Natsula, six months before Sakakibara would cut him). Mark needed the money. The UFC would make this a Titlefight.

If the Yakuza would have bought the UFC.. in a parallel universe.
