Chael just said today that Jose Aldo might be the best takedown defender of all time.

This is nothing new to us who have followed Aldo's career but it is interesting to hear a very experienced fighter and wrestler like Chael make this statement.

Jose is definitely one of the best, if not the best ever in this department. When I think of the best TDD of all time, I think of guys like Aldo, Cro Cop, Chuck, Jones, GSP, BJ Penn.

Even when he finally did get taken down, he displayed amazing scrambling ability. Watch this man furiously shrimp his hips back as he frames and tries to push the head away with his right hand, he establishes a Whizzer (overhook) with his left arm, gets to his base and rises to his feet and throws a knee all in the blink of an eye.

Jose Aldo, an absolute legend. Not only the greatest Featherweight in MMA history, but quite possibly the TDD GOAT

Chael talks a load of shite
Yes, this is true but Chael is not the first person to say this.

Aldo is known for his TDD. So was his training partner Renan Barao, who had a ridiculous TDD% for a few years there. They were obviously working very hard on this at Nova Uniao

Are you a facking moron; how is Chael talking bs here. Dear fat nerd run into a wall headfirst than jump off the nearest bridge you got the iq of a lemming.
Aldo top 3 TDD; no bs here.

Man i miss old school Aldo. One of my all time favorite fighters. Low key still hate conor for taking that away from me.

It's certainly the most proven.

Double Yellow Card makes sense.

You and Sonnen are absolutely correct about Jose though.

Yes he does. Aldo stuffed nearly all of prime Frankie and prime Mendes’ takedowns (2 of the best MMA wrestlers of all time). He got up instantly the 2 times he got taken down.

Aldo has the GOAT TDD and it’s not close

He's on the short list.

Last time that I looked at the all time UFC-stats, Jones, Woodley, Barao and Jimmy Rivera were top five.

Don't remember people having much success taking Tibau down (pre-USADA). The best that Khabib could do was push his back to the fence.

Chael makes a lot of extreme statements for fun, but this is not inaccurate. I have him up here together with BJ. Guys like Khabib or Usman have high %, but it's because they're such dominant offensive wrestlers that I think people don't even try. Mark Hominick held him down on the ground for a while though.

True. Usman and Khabib are not even included in the official stats because they don't meet the threshold for the minimum number of takedowns attempted against them.

Ricardo Lamas also held Aldo down for an entire round, but like in the Hominick fight, he was totally gassed. When he was fresh, it was pretty much impossible to score a TD on him.

Fair enough, I was going off the fact that they always bring up Usman when talking about tdd during the broadcasts. His profile on UFC stats says "100%" and I think I've seen that stat in the pre-fight thingy they show sometimes. Maia kinda had him too.

I'd have to agree with Volador.

It's only half the story IMO. A wrestling specialist will rarely, if ever, get to showcase their take down defense during a fight because their opponent isn't going to waste time trying to fight them on the ground.

Chael once told Ariel Helwani, Jose Aldo was the most overrated fighter ever
