Economy Updated project canceled: California bullet train costs soar to $77 billion

US rails are narrow. They were built for hauling freight slowly.

Bullet trains overseas are on rails that are structurally much different than what the US has.

You simply can't put bullet trains on existing rails. You have to start from scratch.
Also the curvature is different as is how long the rails are. They are like 3 times as long as normal rails to give a smoother ride.

the government taking the tax payers for a ride

I cant even imagine that much money being spent. It's mind boggling.

That thing is gonna end up costing tax payers 500 billion, and by the time it's done it will need 200 billion in updates and repairs. What a fucking mess.

France has been building efficient, affordable, high speed rail for decades. Thousands of miles of it. At prices ranging from $4 million to $15 million per KM. Even at the high end of that price range, San Fran to LA would be under $10 Billion. Despicable.

This high-speed rail project is a warning for the US
California’s “train to nowhere” shows the challenges ahead.

In 2008, voters in California passed Proposition 1A, giving the state the go-ahead to build a high-speed rail line. In theory, it was a great idea. The train would whisk passengers between San Francisco and Los Angeles in less than three hours. Eventually it would also link San Diego and Sacramento. It was estimated that it would take until 2020 to complete.

But now it’s 2022, and so far California’s high-speed rail line is just a few concrete bridges and viaducts strewn across the rural Central Valley. Much of the plan had to be changed, redesigned, or abandoned altogether. Now the project is decades late and way over budget. And that isn’t just California’s problem. Because among the many factors that plagued the project, several are baked into the power structure of the US itself.

Watch the video to understand just how difficult the US makes it to build infrastructure like California’s high-speed rail line.

It's very peculiar that the state that doesn't have the culture to create the best highways(California was apparently rated as 43rd, even though having the highest basket of taxes) somehow would have the culture to create a great railway system. It's absolute nonsense. A lot of well traveled people need to realize without the proper culture you cannot create the things Europe has.

The bullet train was always a corrupt money laundering scheme to steal from the people. It was flawless.

Californians are too dumb to understand.

California receives $25 million grant for high-speed railroad, requests another $1.3 billion

California's High-Speed Rail Authority said Thursday it won $25 million in new federal grant funding to advance its project beyond 119 miles under construction, while pursuing an additional $1.3 billion award.

The U.S. Transportation Department (USDOT) grant will provide more than half of the estimated $41 million for a design contract to connect the cities of Madera and Merced. Last fall, the Biden administration awarded it $24 million "for crucial safety, efficiency and construction projects" around Wasco.

The new grant helps to fund "design civil infrastructure, track and systems and station platforms," USDOT said. The project "is expected to reduce vehicle miles traveled by over 200 million miles per year, and the high-speed rail system will run on entirely renewable energy," it added.

The rail will ultimately travel from San Francisco to the Los Angeles basin at more than 200 miles per hour (322 kph) in less than three hours. The fastest U.S. passenger train, the Acela on the northeast corridor, travels up to 150 miles per hour but aging infrastructure prevents that top speed along much of the route.

California is seeking $1.3 billion in federal grant funding to double-track the 119 miles under construction and purchase new train sets.

Congress approved $66 billion for rail as part of the 2021 $1 trillion infrastructure bill, with Amtrak receiving $22 billion and $36 billion allocated for competitive grants.

In June 2021, the Biden administration restored a $929 million grant for the project. In 2019, then-President Donald Trump pulled funding for the project hobbled by delays and rising costs, calling it a "disaster."

Biden got nicknamed "Amtrak Joe" for commuting between his home state of Delaware and Washington, D.C., for decades as a U.S. senator. He has called boosting rail a crucial part of his strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut congestion.

California bills its system as the first U.S. high-speed rail project, aiming to begin operations in 2029 and complete much of it by 2033. The cost was estimated at $80 billion in 2020, but in February, the authority said costs could ultimately reach $105 billion.

It’s really pathetic how we can’t make anything fast and for a reasonable price anymore. I would love to know what it would actually cost to do without graft and corruption. Maybe 2 billion?

It's not about our ability to "make something" it's about or respect for private property rights--in the US we have to actually pay for the hundreds of miles of valuable land, we can't just take it like other countries.

Imminent domain?
